The Philadelphia Zoo is a pretty good zoo by most standards. Compared with the Bronx zoo and the DC zoo, it is slightly smaller, but it does have some unique aspects. It is very easy to get around with kids, the specialty animal houses have some species of monkeys and reptiles I've never seen before. There is also a hot air balloon ride for an extra fee. The downside is the cost: $17 for adults and parking: $10 to be a 5-10 minute walk away.

This is a antique specialty store in old city that specializes in this highly sought after type of furniture. Their collection changes fairly rapidly but they usually offer many types of chairs, tables, dressers, bureaus, etc. They also sell antique prints, art, and native american rugs. This stuff is not cheap, but compared with other similar dealers, the prices are fair. They will arrange to ship furniture anywhere in the US. My in-laws, who are fanatical collectors from Wisconsin, say this is the best mission oak dealer in the area.

In the age of the huge, impersonal superstores like Babies R Us, it is nice to see a place like Karl's, with sales people that can actually answer your questions. They carry a wide variety of quality nursery furniture (read: plenty of Morigeau-Lepine, Pali, etc.). You can go up to the 2nd and 3rd floor and see more cribs than what you'll be able to distinguish. They also carry quality accesories and clothing downstairs. The downside of Karl's is that it feels a little intimidating. There's so much stuff, it's hard to go in with a baby in a stroller without worrying that he will knock something.

I can't believe Metropolitan Bakery brought their ovens from France! Why? Because their baguettes never taste like the ones in Paris. They are good, but not great. And during the week the Reading Terminal Market location often runs out of the Whole Wheat Baguettes - they never bring enough to this non-baking location.

This is a great salon! It is not overpriced and the people that work there are relaxed, fun and, most importantly when dealing with hair, they know style! I can heartily recommend Joe, but the other people that work there seem to do a good job as well. The only problem is getting an appointment during the weekends - call in advance to avoid disappointments!

Okay, the haircuts here are ONLY $10! I admit I have not been brave enough to get a haircut here, but my dear hubby and my best friend get haircuts here and they both look good, so I can vouch for the quality of the haircut. Granted, they never take a long time with either of them, and sometimes there's a line, but you can not beat the price. It costs less than Supercuts!

This is a quaint little bed and breakfast on 4th and Bainbridge street, which is one block south of South street. The building itself dates back 200 years. Each room is unique in both layout and furniture. Both times I've stayed there the rooms had their own bathrooms, but I believe there are some rooms that use a shared bathroom. The owners are pretty nice and informative about the city. The breakfast was hearty and included oatmeal with fresh berries. The price is pretty good compared with other B&Bs 2-3 blocks to the north. I say the location is not the best because South Street itself is a rough around the edges strip of bars, tattoo parlors, and lingerie shops that most likely would not appeal to those staying in a B&B. That said I actually like the location.
The owners do a wine and cheese session in the afternoon too.

Despite being used, books here are in great shape, and although you won't find books for a buck in here, you will save over buying them new.

This store carries gorgeous and exclusive baby, toddler and kid's clothes, classic toys (lots of wood toys and soft stuffed toys), and nursery decorations. The trouble here is how to avoid getting too carried away and spending mucho moolah for little clothes that will be outgrown in a couple of months. Quality is superb, you won't find uncomfortable polyesters or tacky appliques here!

Tucked away in little Juniper street, just off Walnut and smack in the middle of Center City, is Royal Custom Tailor. The service here is FANTASTIC. You are immediately greeted by the tailor himself. Besides making custom men's suits, he also takes on smaller jobs - hemming and the such. He has a great eye and is not afraid to make suggestions regarding length and fit. I've had pants, suits, and even a coat altered here, with great and quick results every time.
