Campus Apartments operates a large amount of the available rental housing near the University of Pennsylvania. As such, they are quasi-monopolists, and often accused of gouging the students here (who mostly can well afford it, but regardless).
Nonetheless, the quality of housing offered by Campus Apartments is often worth the elevated prices. There are many extremely bad or shabby apartments near Penn, but Campus Apartments manages to instill a baseline halfway decent level of quality into their rentals.

The Chop Shop is built on the no-frills haircut business model. A basic cut here starts at around 10 bucks, but you pay for extras like a wash, shampoo, etc etc. This works great for people who just want to touch up their hair and don't want the whole works, or simply don't want to pay for the rather useless extra services one gets at most salons.
Despite the cheap prices the quality of the cuts is actually quite decent. I had one of the better haircuts in my life for just above 10 including tip. Of course, your mileage may vary - perhaps you could get a trim from them first before deciding to trust them with a whole new look.

As a hair salon in Hyde Park, they mostly cater to the University community. Here's the interesting thing - my male friends, who are Asian, have their hair cut here. Now, it's actually hard to find hair salons that cut East Asian hair well, because it tends to be floppy and thin compared to, say, Caucasian or African hair, but this place does a surprisingly decent job. Prices are moderate and they run weekly specials. Overall, not a bad place to go to for a haircut in Hyde Park.

Remember the movie You've Got Mail? Well, this bookstore doesn't have Meg Ryan and it's not about Children's books, but it is one of the few remaining independent bookstores in Chicago. Worth a visit if you're on the shopping stretch of Hyde Park on 57th street. Collection is not very large - it is a small bookstore - but it does have the latest bestsellers, etc.

The Seminary Coop is located across the street from the University of Chicago main quadrangle. It's loosely affiliated with the school - a large part of their business comes from selling books for classes - but it is by no means a 'school bookstore'. The Seminary Coop's business is about serious scholarly books in the humanities and social sciences. They have a vast selection available for browsing and if you're visiting the University, I highly recommend dropping in if you have any interests along those lines.

Powell's is a Hyde Park Institution. Catering to the University of Chicago crowd for years, Powell's stocks an extremely eclectic variety of used books. Since this is a University community we are talking about, most of the books here have an academic bent to them, true, so you do have to have some scholarly interests to get the most out of it. They also put out books for free on the sidewalk now and then, although these are even more obscure than the ones inside.

The Music Box Theatre is a converted old theater that now shows films and other types of shows. Because it used to be a theater, it still retains the stage space which allows some creative intepretations... for example, every Halloween, the Music Box stages the Rocky Horror Picture Show with live-action on the stage and audience participation. Let's put it this way - this isn't the place to go to for the latest in projection technology, sound, or blockbusters - but it's definitely an experience.

Mayflower is a chinese grocery store at the end of the Chinatown mall. It's an extremely popular store because it stocks a very good range of chinese groceries in a very small space. Best thing about it is that the goods seem a lot fresher than those in some of the older chinese groceries in Chinatown. Also has a butcher section and a live seafood section in the back. Chinese families shop here mostly but you can get by too if you're not Chinese, because most products are recognizable and/or have english markings.

Foreign Car Hospital has been a Hyde Park car repair institution for a number of years. They are a small independent mechanic outfit that takes CASH only. You're probably thinking this is a bit dodgy, but everyone I know recommends FCH because they are honest and reliable. The guy who runs the place is knowledgeable and you should consult him by phone before taking your car there. FCH does mostly mechanical work, so if you need your brakes done, fluids changed, parts repaired, etc, it's a good place to go to. Generally, leave your car in the morning at the shop and pick it up in the evening.
FCH's prices are about the same as the local repair chains. However, I - and others - feel that the owner and mechanics are more reliable than the chains.

This is a medical services chain affiliated with Beth Israel. I went to this facility on a Saturday afternoon with a friend who had the flu. As you might know, trying to find a doctor on a weekend or a Saturday in Manhattan is not that easy, and without making an appointment it's probably quite impossible. DOCS takes walk-ins and the wait isn't that long - about 1 hour .
Not having gone to very many doctors in Manhattan, it's difficult to say how it compares. The fact that they take walk-ins and are reasonably fast seems to be the main selling point.
