Wherever you have a University, you'll have students who desperately need to photocopy things, bind and file papers, and otherwise need basic office services.
Campus copy center has been helping Penn students kill trees for decades. Seriously, though, they have an above average level of quality and service: the employees actually seem to know what they're doing, which isn't always true for the chains like Kinko's, and the prices are quite reasonable, especially considering the captive market next doors.
They also offer shipping services, in addition to their photocopy and binding services.

The "Med" has been a popular hangout for University of Chicago students, and Hyde Park residents, for decades. Certainly, the vast amount of damage that patrons of the Med have done to the wooden tables and chairs over the years attests to that fact. (Kids, if your parents went to the U. of C., maybe they left their initials in one of the tables! go and look!)
The Med serves classic American fare - that is, burgers, pizzas, fries, shakes, and desserts like apple pie. Their milkshakes stand out because they have a pretty high ice cream - to - milk ratio, AND they use premium ice cream and real cream, making them especially thick and yummy. (people with heart problems beware)
Decor in the Med is extremely eclectic. No one has any idea where all the various carved wooden statues and original sketches that are scattered around the place come from.
They also have some pretty big round tables in the ground floor, making it one of the better options in Hyde Park for a group gathering.

Well, I'm actuallly not sure if the many Nobel Laureates at the University of Chicago actually do drink, but any who imbibe have definitely done so at Jimmy's Woodlawn Tap at some point in the last few decades.
Jimmy's is a Hyde Park Institution, and is pretty much across the road from the University of Chicago, hence giving it quite a strong University flavor. Most days of the week, a large portion of the clientele will be University affiliated, but it has enough neighborhood and working regulars that it doesn't feel dominated by the college kids.

Unfortunately, in most social settings, the sole purpose of alcohol - and alcoholic drinks - is to serve as a social lubricant. In certain types of bars, for example, it really doesn't matter what is being served on tap, so long as it is
a) cheap.
b) doesn't taste too much like recycled bodily fluids.
c) gets everyone reasonably smashed and hence amusing.
Tria more or less inverts this philsophy; at Tria, the entire point is to try interesting and well-made beers and wines from a variety of foreign and domestic producers. This is supplemented by the third fermented product - cheese. Tria is not a place to get really drunk or to pick up other drunk people - it's much preferable to go there with people you're already friends with, and who want to try something different for a change.

Together with Shiroi Hana, which is just down the road on Clark, Matsuya is the other cheap Japanese restaurant in the Wrigleyville area.
Matsuya differs from Shiroi Hana mainly in ambience; Matsuya has a much more traditional Japanese restaurant look, with wooden booths and subdued lighting. It is not, I think, a romantic spot, but it can be cosy.
The main reason for coming to Matsuya is their combination meals. These come in at around $10 and are really good value, including miso soup, entree, and dessert.

There are some cardinal rules of dining, or so I'm told. One of them is to never eat cheap sushi.
But what is one to do if one wants to eat Japanese food, and on a budget? The solution might be to check out Shiroi Hana. Shiroi Hana has a full range of Japanese foods, ranging from bento box style combination sets to sushi. It's true - the sushi here is only about average, which is appropriate for the price - but the non sushi items are quite good.
The best values are their combination meals, which feature miso soup, a bento box set including sushi and a main like teriyaki chicken or beef, rice, and a dessert. This sets you back just over $10, and it's extremely filling.
Make no mistake, haute Japanese cuisine this isn't, but it's solid value.

A few articles ago I explained the distinction between 'real' and 'street-legal' insurance. Basically, one type, you buy, because you really want the financial protection; the other type, you buy just so that you won't get a ticket if the cops stop you.
I think Magnum Insurance sort of falls more in the middle. They don't seem as dodgy and unreliable as the other low cost insurers, but they're pretty cheap nonetheless. They have a large Hispanic clientele, so if you prefer to speak Spanish you'll be able to do business in Espanol with them.
A friend was insured by them for 2 years. Now, she never had a claim, so we never got to see how their customer service was like, but she has pretty low tolerance for dodginess, so the fact that she remained with them is a good thing, I suppose.
I would recommend Magnum if you are looking to get insurance that may be more reliable but still won't cost you more than your car's worth. (note: you should only be the market for cheap insurance if, in fact, 'regular' insurance premiums would cost more than your car is worth)

It's not exactly hard to find a shop that sells sporting goods in Manhattan. The island is crammed full of retail stores, after all. However, it is quite hard to find a truly good, general purpose sporting good store. In my experience, Manhattan sports stores tend towards being either chains or specialists. Chains are good if you know what you want and don't need service, since they have low prices. Similarly, you might need a specialist if you are really into mountain-climbing/roller blading/whatever your extreme sport is.
But what if you just want good sporting equipment, aren't an expert, and need some good professional advice on what you should get?
I think Paragon Sports fills that role pretty well. They're probably not as cheap as the discount chains, but their prices struck me as reasonable. Their staff for the most part know what they're selling, which is increasingly rare in this world of chain stores. Well worth a look if you need quality sporting gear.

I often wonder how places like the Video Library will compete with Netflix in the coming years. The Video Library's main selling point is that it specializes in good movies, that is, it has some of the harder to find titles that you won't get at Blockbuster or one of the big chains.
Still! Rentals are priced the old fashioned way, that is, by number of rental days. None of this 'monthly subscription' business here. They have locations in a couple of other places in the Philadelphia region, but I'm only familiar with the West Philly location.
Check it out if you want to find that hard-to-locate older title.

I was stuck in Kalispell, MT, a few years back when my car broke down on the way to Glacier National Park.
Anyway, conveniently enough, just about the time the car started showing signs of trouble, I was trying to figure out where to stay the night - and I was near the Aero Inn, so, ahem, in I went!
The Aero Inn is owned by some ex-Air Force pilot, hence the name. It's quite comfortable and clean - I had no complaints at all, and the prices are quite in line with the usual chain motels. I recommend checking it out if you're in the area and you would prefer to stay at an independent instead of one of the usual chains.
