Dr. Carothers is a great pediatric ophthalmologist. I have taken both of my children to him. I am amazed at how he is able to see things in the eyes of even babies! He has a very mild quiet mannered disposition. He is good with the kids and seems very knowledgeable about his profession. The office at the end of the Huguenot Bridge is very nice and has a play room for the kids.

Everyone needs to visit this site at least once in their lifetime. Here is the middle of Virginia our country reunited after the Civil War. Here is the actual home where Lee surrendered to Grant. There is also the original courthouse, a store, a jail, and other old buildings. The tours can be self guided or with a group that leaves every 20 minutes or so. There are often reenacters and guides in period costumes. The small gift shop is also worth checking out. Of course Civil War buffs enjoy tracing all the battlefields nearby as well. You can follow signs marked Lee's retreat.

This monument celebrates the birthplace of Booker T Washington. I grew up in this area so we often visited for field trips or family outings. There is a visitor's center with memorabilia and a video of Washington's life. After this you can tour the grounds that include old barns, stables, workshops, etc. It is actually a working farm so there are animals and crops around as well. On weekends and with groups they offer guided tours. They also have special days with candle making, nail making, and other activities. I think people by pass this area on their road trips through Virginia, but it's worth a pit stop to understand a vital piece of our history.

This Christian bookstore is often overlooked. It's location on Midlothian Turnpike is behind the Lazy boy store. I only end up going there when there is something specific I need. It's not in a good location to just browse. They offer nice gifts, cards, books, and kids items. The other Heaven and Earth in Midlothian has closed and consolidated with this one. If you're looking for the latest Veggie Tales or Max Lucado book, it will be there.

This restaurant is very comfortable for those who do not necessarily enjoy the pub life. They have a large dining room on one side, a large bar in the middle and a billiards room on the other end. The staff was very nice and the service was good. We enjoyed our food as well. The menu offered a large variety. The only down side is that you have to walk through the smoky bar to get to the restroom. The bar is large enough that you can meet a group of friends for drinks in a comfortable atmosphere.

A Thai friend of ours took us to this restaurant at Short Pump Town Center. She claims it is the closest to her homeland that she found in Richmond. She actually worked at another Thai restaurant but preferred to eat here. The menu offered a lot of options and you could choose to get things spicier or tamer. The decorations were intriguing and the eatery had a very modern feel. My picky mother in law and 3 year old enjoyed it as well.

Pleasants Hardware in Oxbridge Square is a fairly new store. It is a "small town" type hardware store. The greet you as you walk in and get help with whatever you need. They offer comparable prices, great sales, and coupon deals. (Sign up for the Ace handyman club to get coupons in the mail.) You can't beat the easy in, easy out that the store offers. It can be so much quicker than a big hardware store.

Five guys is rated one of the best restaurants to get burgers and fries! The restaurant is like a diner, but it is easy to go in and get items to go. The service is quick and each burger is cooked as soon as you order it. The burgers come with 2 patties automatically unless you order a child's burger. The small size fry is enough for the whole family (at least our family of 3)! The fries are cooked well and crispy. They throw extras in every bag! They also offer free peanuts while you wait. (of course that is bad for families with peanut allergies.)

The best thing about Cici's is that kids eat free until 4. Then there is a cheap kid's price. The adult price is not bad either. Our whole family can eat for under $9 right now! There is no waiting. You can go right through the line with a salad bar, over $15 pizza choices and a dessert bar. You can also special order pizzas and they have take out now. In the back is a game room that always draws the kids too.

This is a local ice cream shop with great home made ice cream. It is kind of addictive. The consistency is just right and it is not fluffy ice cream. They have tons of flavors and offer holiday and seasonal special flavors. They have been voted Richmond's best ice cream I think. In the warm weather there are tables you can sit outside, but it's definitely worth the year round treat! It's behind Gold's Gym on West Broad St.
