The Lebanese Kitchen is a favorite of Fuller Seminary students who are shopping at the Christian book store (Archives) next door. I wouldn't call it dirt cheap - maybe more like $8 per person, but it is a fantastic value, with good, authentic, healthy food.
They make wonderful falafels and kebabs, and surprisingly decent salads. Definitely go with any recommended specials.
It's not the most charming place, but casual and comfortable. You know you are in a family place and the food tastes like you're in a friend's home.

The food is a little uneven, from adequete to quite good. I'd skip the American food and stick with the Middle Eastern food. Kebabs and hummus are great. The buffet gets mixed reviews. It's definitely a good deal, but only if you plan to eat a lot.
Evenings are very lively here, often with live music and the aforementioned belly dancer. They are also very nice about accomodating large parties and catering.

We saw Sondheim's A Little Night Music here earlier this year. I had been to the Dorothy Chandler years ago, but this was my first time in a while. We had cheap seats up top and, my goodness, they are steep! I felt like if I were not very careful I would fall out of the balcony and take out a couple of the fat cats below. Yikes!
If you bring your camera, you'll have to check it downstairs. They have soft drinks and wine at a small stand on the side of the lobby. Otherwise, there is a lively scene outside before the show as people dine in the courtyard at the restaurant. It is not a good place to bring a picnic, so eat beforehand or make reservations.

The Hollywood Bowl is a great place to experience LA at its best. Each summer series offers up an eclectic mix of classical, pop, jazz, opera, and world music. And this is music for the masses. While the box seats in front will cost you a ton of dough, the cheap seats in the back can cost as little as $1. You get cheapskates treating their wives to a beautiful picnic dinner and performance, along with the city's powerful elite dining up front.
Parking is a crazy mess. But I like the long walk from the parking lot up to the Bowl. You walk past the sausage vendors on the sidewalk and the jazz guy playing in the tunnel. Then you mill around with the huge crowd eating their picnic dinners waiting for the show.
During the summer the show begins just before the sun sets, providing the most romantic crowded space in LA. And as night falls, you're treated to the Bowl's perfect acoustics giving the cheapos in the back the same powerful sound as the fat cats in the front row.

The Pantages was restored to its full glory a few years ago and was featured in Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator." And what a job they did! When you walk into the lobby, you are transported to the Golden Age of Hollywood - all glamour and opulence. The lobby glitters and glows in painted gold with rich red carpet. The Pantages has also hosted most of the big shows that pass through LA, so there is often the buzz of a star-struck night.
Parking is not too hard in the many independent lots around the theater, and ranges from $5 - $10. You walk on the stars of Hollywood's bygone lumineries and the current restoration of the area. Hollywood Blvd had become a seedy, ironic tourist trap - filled with souvenir stands, homeless youth, and sex shops. But there is a movement to restore it to a vibrant showpiece that the restoration of the Pantages has anchored. In a few years, this will again be THE place to be in LA.
One last thing about the Pantages: every seat is pretty good. For many shows, we have bought the cheapest seats in the house - in the last two rows. The view of the stage is not too steep and still feels close enough to see the actors' expressions. At other places, like the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion you feel like you're a mile away. The Pantages is the best place in LA to see a show!

Don't judge a school by its undergrads, or else you'll think USC is an idiot fraternity of shallow fools. I was at a local gym once wearing my UCLA shorts. I left and didn't notice anything as I drove away. 10 blocks away as I was stopped at a light, another car pulled up next to me. When the light turned green, the car tore away just as the guy inside yelled at me, "USC, m*ther******!"
USC is actually full of great professors, good research, excellent professional schools, and the largest population of international students of any university in the US. The administration does quite a bit to reach out to students from the inner city, and is the largest employer in the area the school is in (South Central LA). For these reasons, USC should be forgiven for the hubris and excess of its undergrads.

In the spectrum of Christian seminaries, Fuller represents a theological middle ground. Dallas and Talbott are dominated by very conservative thinkers. While places like Claremont and Duke produce liberals that are at odds with most evangelicals.
You will find professors at Fuller that represent all sorts of perspectives. But the fact that they can co-exist at one school shows that the school values balance.
Particularly noteworthy is the School of World Mission, which features classes that are slightly less academic and more useful to people on the frontlines of ministry.

I could go on and on about what a great school UCLA is. World-class professors, a broad spectrum of excellence in research and teaching, and a great environment to learn. But apart from it as the central place of knowledge in Southern California, UCLA is a great place to spend some time visiting.
It is located in the best part of LA, nestled in beautiful West LA, near Brentwood, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica. The campus is compact and easily walkable, and beautiful at every turn. The school has been on a building binge for the past decade, erecting state-of-the-art facilities to complement the classic structures.
Any tour of UCLA must begin with the Royce Quad, in my opinion the most pleasant place to sit and enjoy an hour. Royce Hall and Powell Library offer gorgeous brick facades and out across Jans Steps is a dominating view of Drake Stadium and the dorms. On weekends, people lounge around on the grass and play frisbee. And during the week, coeds mill about strolling to classes or hanging out with their friends in front of the library.
Head north to the Sculpture Garden and appreciate the classic Henry Moore piece, as well as some modern pieces that have been installed in the last decade. On the east side of campus is a hidden gem - the Botanical Gardens offer a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of the campus and the city. And finish off your day by trying to see if the basketball or volleyball teams are practicing in Pauley Pavillion.

Dr. Famili is a great all-around dentist. He teaches at the USC dental school, has a celebrity-filled Westside practice, and is very good. It's a little hard to get appointments because the Santa Monica Dental Group is so popular. But you can rest assured that he is very good.
The office is staffed by 4-6 dentists, plus hygienists, and admin staff. It's a pretty hoppin' operation.

Typical Honda dealer. Hard sell. Negotiations take forever.
I spent a weekday morning there trying to buy a car. We went round and round, with at least 4 rounds of "Let me check with my manager." (this is obvious BS. It means, "Let me go make personal calls while I let you stew for a while.")
Finally, we were close. I was OK with the price but didn't want to pay $300 for their stupid dealer-installed alarm. I said, "No way. I'm not paying for that alarm. Take it off the car and I'll buy it." They spent 15 minutes pleading with me and marvelling that I was going to play with fire by not having an alarm (they're useless). I said forget it and left.
As I pulled my keys out of my pocket, the sales guy literally came running out waving his hands in the air shouting, "Come back inside! We can make a deal!" I went inside, and they wouldn't take it off, and I left again.
Honda dealers are such jerks. Use Edmunds.com or some other site to get Internet pricing. Going through the internet/fleet departments circumvents these jerks.
