Sambar is adjacent to Ballard's hidden gem, Le Gourmand, and is in fact run by the same owners. Sambar is tiny, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in a hip atmosphere. I've eaten there a half dozen times and haven't had a bad meal yet. Sambar specializes in cocktails and even if you profess to not like them, Sambar will break down your resolve. The menu is small and portions are appetizer-sized – perfect noshing. Order a few off the menu and be sure to listen for specials as they usually reflect something wonderful cooking in the adjacent French restaurant. Also, Sambar is open late: to midnight, M-Th, and to 2am on Fri and Sat.

Owners Sarah and Tim have put in time at other restaurants around town and now have their own place in upper Fremont. (The restaurant is a block or so above Brad's Swingside and 1/2 block above Paseo.) The small but cozy place features a lunch counter that is cool to sit at if you are dining alone and shared tables elsewhere in the restaurant. What stands out with Persimmon is the thought that goes into getting just the right flavor even in something as seemingly simple as a turkey sandwich. Brunches on weekends can get hectic as more people are discovering this place – but even if you have to wait a few minutes it's worth it. They started serving dinner in June.

You may not notice the new gelato shop on the square where Lenin stands in Fremont, but it is worth looking for. It's right behind the Taco Del Mar. PostMark has a decent choice of quality gelatos and sorbets. This is definitely not a Coldstone affair with heaps of super sweet ice cream that you usually feel sorry you ordered.
