The Meadowlands Racetrack is located right next to Giants Stadium in the meadowlands complex. Racing occurs all year long. This is a fun place to go on the weekend with friends. The Pegasus East restaurant has a huge buffet and is not that expensive. It is on the top level and offers great views of the track. There is a dress code at the restaurant (no jeans).

Rice University Art Gallery hosts a collection of contemporary art. The art is usually created on site by visiting artists or current art students. The pieces are for sale and can be purchased for quite a bargain. As usual, the beauty of art is in the eye of the beholder and I have seen some really great pieces for under $500 but I have also seen some real crap that you could not pay me to take home much less display. It is a small gallery but well worth a trip if you are on campus. I do not think it is open on the weekends.

The San Jacinto Monument commemorates the battle where Texas won its freedom from Mexico. When you look at the monument it looks a lot like the Washington Monument. Though it is taller. In fact, I think it is the tallest monument in the world. In the base of the monument there is a museum. At the top is an observation deck. The monument makes for a good day trip for the family. There are some admission fees but they are not much. Parking is free.

Space Center Houston offers a variety of activities for children and adults. It is hard to come visit Houston and not want to see where history was made. There is a tram tour that is a lot of fun. It takes you on a guided behind the scenes tour of the space center. There are some rockets on the grounds that you can walk up to and touch. There is a place inside called Kids Space Place that has a lot of things for children. For example, kids can get on a scale and see how much they would weigh on different planets. All in all a fun place to bring relatives when they come and visit. Cost is about $18 for an adult and $14 for children (4 to 11).

The Children's Museum of Houston is a great place to bring the kids for the day. There are so many activities that kids, younger and older, will not know where to begin. There is a section of the museum set up as a farmers market where children can act as cashiers. There is a place where children can sit at an anchor desk and see themselves on television. The location is great and parking is usually available on the street. I believe this museum was voted one of the best children's museum in the country.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston is a very good museum. The museum's permanent collection is not bad, but it is not the best either. However, there is usually a major touring exhibit. I saw Diego Rivera's work when I was there. The museum is fairly large and is good for an afternoon. The museum also houses a lot of photography exhibits.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is a great place to spend a day. It is definitely a fun museum for kids as they get to look at the bones of huge dinosaurs. In addition, there is usually a special exhibit at the museum, but there is an additional charge. The museum also has an IMAX theater, which is also a separate expense. There is a McDonald's inside for a quick bite. We had a year pass and went fairly often. The kids never got bored. I highly recommend this museum.

Hockey is a brutal sport, unless you are at a Mighty Ducks game. Fighting is not revered at the stadium. For kids, however, this place is great. Being that it is in California, I call this more entertainment than sports. Between periods there are numerous "acts" going on to entertain children. The stadium itself is fantastic. Great seats no matter where you sit. Marble galore. Good food, albeit expensive. The team is not bad either.

When the weather gets nice in the spring, this park gets crowded. That is because it has everything. There is a zoo inside the park which is open year round from 10 to 4:30, pony rides from April to November, a train from April to October, and a carousel which is open year round. In addition there are 6 picnic areas, 3 pavillions, a baseball field, a softball field, a soccer field, fishing in the pond, tennis courts, a basketball court, and a huge playground for children. Get there early, bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the day.

Located in front of Deerbrook mall, this restuarant is a buffet. I was skeptical of going here but wanted to see the sushi. I must say that I was really surprised at the quality of the sushi. The other dishes are good, but I ate mostly sushi. And when I say sushi I am not talking about california rolls. This place has tuna, salmon, squid, red snapper, and other items. That alone was worth more than the $7.75 + tax.
