Nothing really is spectactular about this place; it just provides a good hangout spot for people who do not have their license yet. (There are lots of teens mulling around.) Located off the 60 freeway, it is free admission and free parking. However, the prices of the go carts, mini golf, and arcades make it so it's not worth the visit there.

Universal Studios is more about seeing than doing (as in riding a ride). There are many exhibits showcasing their productions (for example, the I Love Lucy store/exhibit). There is also a tram ride that provides a fun way to look at their movies that have been made there. This is a great picture place, providing lots of backdrops and nice scenery in the form of famous movies and shows. However, I don't think there's enough to do to last the whole day, unless the summer lines are really long.
As an added bonus, after you're done with the park, you can visit Universal Citywalk, located right outside the gates of the theme park. Another great tourist attraction, it provides street performers, some good eateries, and good people-watching. There are also several movie premieres held here.

A park more for nostalgia than fun. It has a decent (but slow) roller coaster and a Ferris wheel. The whole park is set up at the end of the Santa Monica Pier close to Third Street Promenade. Good for a few hours before or after your shopping trip.
Tickets can be pricey for the rides. I recall the Ferris wheel being about $4 or so per person. At night, there are a lot of teenagers and couples mulling around. Daytime is more for the tourists.
Because the beach is right below the pier, it provides an idyllic setting for a small amusement park. However, the rides are not that fun or cheap... I would settle just for the beach.

Admission can usually be found for cheap through all of the coupons floating around. Expect prices to be about $25 for adults, even in the summer. This year, they had a deal where until about April or so, if you bought a full price ticket (~$48), you could get a whole year for free. Not a bad deal at all, and you can still go to the "Fright Fest" they hold in October.
The best thing about Six Flags is that the park is so big that you can spend the whole day there. There are no fireworks or night programs, but the rides light up and are very fun in the dark.

The Getty is conveniently located off the 405 close to Santa Monica. After you park, there is a free tram that takes you up a steep hill into the grounds. There are several different buildings which house the artwork, and each is spectacularly beautifully decorated and designed.
The outdoor park type of area they set up by making structures out of plants is very beautiful. Very perfect for an outdoor picnic. If you would like to save money, bring your own food. Also, admission is free.
A very lovely place to spend the whole day.

Because they advertised on their website that it was a 30-minute or less oil change (or it's free), I decided to go here on the way to work. I noticed there was a large poster on the wall with the same ad. However, I had to stand in a line of about 3 people, with each person having to be helped for about 10 minutes by the same service man. There goes the 30 minutes. Anyway, so I give my info to the service people, and they say to wait. Which I did for another 45 minutes. Bear with me, it's been over an hour now. After which, I had to take my receipt to pay next door in the sales area. However, I told them it had been over 30 minutes, and they made me wait 20 minutes while they COUNTED how many minutes it had been, and also help other people with their tires. Finally, the service manager acknowledged their error and gave it to me for free.
Not worth it because I was 30 minutes late for work.

Disneyland provides a place of nostalgia for so many people everywhere. That's why they can charge so much for their tickets, and not really update that many of the rides, and still EVERYONE will come (myself included). Going to Disneyland makes is a familiar and safe experience. Expect lots of children, foreigners, and smooching couples. The rides are not intended to be scary at all, and are intended to just follow the theme of that certain area of the park to AMUSE you. And actually, it really is fun to be there, taking pictures with all the characters and riding kiddy rides. The scariest is probably Splash and Space Mountain, in that order.
The biggest caveat to this is their expensive prices on everything! Tickets are $50+ and the churro I got there was like $4.

It's a new, clean, small Disney theme park that is very different from Disneyland. The place revolves around California's culture of beaches, agriculture, Hollywood, etc. The rides are not many, but very cute and picturesque in that Disney manner. The place is very very small, and you can play around for about half of the day and you're done.
Highlights include the Aladdin musical and the roller coaster. I thought the musical would be a dinky 5 minute special for kids, but it was in a beautiful theatre and the show lasted almost an hour. It is totally worth going there just for that. The roller coaster is actually not lame as expected, and has a very refreshing feel to it.
Prices are high for only a CA Adventure ticket, and it's not really worth the $50-something price. If they ever have specials on tickets, go then.

This outdoor shopping mall is highly overrated. It is filled with upper-middle class chain dining restaurants that are usually average at best (ex. Cheesecake Factory). The movie theatre is a little on the expensive side ($9 for students) and parking is especially hard to find due to the construction.
There is however, unique experiences such as a (very very small) outdoor ice skating rink, and a Ferris wheel that is usually not operating. Most of the stores are not worth shopping at. It's basically a good date spot for someone you don't really know, because there's enough distractions around.

Knott's has a few really great rides, and mostly "good" rides. You can usually only stay for about 6 hours or so (as opposed to Disneyland or Magic Mtn), because there are so few good rides and the theme park itself is not that large. If you're into shows, there are also a few mediocre ones as well. However, I think Knott's shines in that the few great roller coasters that they have are unique to their park. I haven't been on a ride like Silver Bullet (?) anywhere else. Also, it's great b/c there's always coupons for discounted prices floating around somewhere, making tickets about $28 or so for adults in the summer. That's a lot easier on the wallet than the other parks in SoCal. Also, the lines weren't that long on an August Saturday. They also offer half-price ticketing after 4pm.
Food-wise, the Chicken Dinner Restaurant rocks.
