First United Methodist Church, or Chicago Temple as its known, is located in the heart of downtown Chicago across Washington Street from the Daley Center. In addition to the usual 8:30 and 11 a.m. services and a more contemporary 5:00 Saturday night service, Chicago Temple offers a lunch hour service every Wednesday at 12:10. Even with communion following the service, the service goes from 12:10 to about 12:45. Communion is also offered Thursday mornings.
For those interested, there are daily free tours of the "Chapel in the Sky"--the chapel located in the top of the church building, which houses many floors of offices between the sanctuary and the chapel.

If you're looking for basic office supplies or good customer service, skip Office Max and Staples and go to Atlas Stationers. Although they don't have weekly sales (though the annual sidewalk sale in August has some good buys), prices are fair and they will order anything you need. Along with office supplies, they have a good selection of cards, gifts, nice pens, and bigger office purchases like nice desk chairs. Atlas is located on Lake Street, just west of Franklin.

In Chicago, there are plenty of good steak houses. There are others that are more expensive, more popular, fancier, and more well-known. But if you are looking for a comfortable, classy but not ostentatious steak house serving good quality food in a convenient location, Kinzie Chophouse is a good choice. Located across the street from the Merchandise Mart, the only real drawback to Kinzie is the uneven quality of its servers.
For those who eat fish and chicken and not beef, the shrimp risotto is excellent, as is the chicken pot pie. Kinzie also has good salads and a decent key lime pie.
For a cheap date, check out the super cheap appetizers in the bar during happy hour.

If all you want is some cheap pizza and you don't care about quality, don't call Great Plains. But if you want delicious pizza with a range of crusts (wheat is my favorite, especially when you add honey to the crust), Great Plains is the place to go to or call. The best value is to go to the restaurant (located on Main Street downtown) and get a slice at lunch. Even if you have two slices and a soda, you can still eat well for well under ten dollars.

Frontera Grill is Mexican unlike you've ever had before. From the authentic Mexican classics on the menu to amazing, creative takes on Mexican cuisine made with organic vegetables and handmade cheeses, the food is outstanding. Add an extensive and reasonably priced wine list, creative and delicious margaritas, and a range of good quality tequilas, and Frontera Grill is the perfect place for an incredible Mexican dining experience at a lower price than its sister restaurant, Topolobampo, with which it shares a kitchen.

To many Chicagoans, the Original Rainbow Cone is just a stand at Taste of Chicago. Those people have no idea what they're misisng. Original Rainbow Cone is actually a (mostly) year-round ice cream shop in southwest Chicago. It is well worth the trip, even from the north side, to have a delicious rainbow cone or other ice cream treat. The shop itself is air conditioned and has lots of outdoor seating, including under the awning in back. There is free parking, but be prepared for a quick line to get ice cream if you're there on a hot day. Also, call ahead for the hours--they close at 9 during the winter and 10:30 during the summer, but I've made the trek there only to discover they were closed.

Kiva is a full-service salon and boutique. It offers services that you just won't find anywhere else--creative offerings like Chakra Stone Therapy stone facials and Hot Lava Mud pedicures. Plenty of spas in Chicago claim to be full service, but Kiva actually is. For example, Kiva's fall makeover package includes a haircut, highlights and style, manicure pedicure, facial, and make up application. Prices, by Chicago standards, are fairly average, but the calming environment is anything but average.

Adventureland, located just outside Des Moines in Altoona, Iowa, lacks the flash and exotic rides of Six Flags, but has drastically improved and expanded over the past five years beyond the old favorite rides of the Tornado roller coaster and the Raging River. New rides recently opened are the Sidewinder, a gigantic pendulum, and Saw Mill Splash, a water ride. Even on rainy days, there are lots of shows to enjoy. Nearby Adventureland Inn and Campground provide convenient and economical options for lodging without having to drive back to Des Moines (and pricier hotels) at night.

Although the Science Center of Iowa is not new, it's not flashy by today's standards for new museums, and it's probably not the most popular Des Moines attraction. The Science Center of Iowa is, though, full of hands-on exhibits that teach things like static electricity, how volcanoes erupt, etc.. One of the highlights for people not as interested in science is still the laser show. Especially for a rainy day, the Science Center of Iowa is worth a visit, regardless of your age or interest in science.

Dagwood's serves great sandwiches, salad, soups, and milk shakes to the downtown office crowd. (It's not open on weekends, and it's open only for lunch.) Dagwood's has some interesting choices that you won't find anywhere else (including, of course, the Dagwood, an enormous sandwich with just about everything imaginable on it), but most important is their sandwich bread, which is excellent. Milkshakes are rather small, but delicious. Lots of space for seating, but it fills up quickly at lunch time so get there early to eat in.
