If you're a current or former Cal student, you've probably purchased your textbooks at Ned's before.
Ned's is the go-to bookstore for most Cal Students. Among all the bookstores where you can purchase textbooks (ASUC, Campus, etc) Nedsoffers the best selection and the best prices for used textbooks. At the end of the semester, you can sell back your books to recoup some of your costs.
My experience has been that Ned's will give you approximately 40% of what the full retail cost of book. So if the original book cost $100 and you purchased it used at Ned's for $70, you'll probably get back around $40. Of course, this all depends on several factors (ie. if a new edition is coming out, if the book is being used next semester).
Ned's can get crowded at the beginning and end of each semester. Sell your books back early to get the best prices.

Clarion Music Center is a great place to find exotic musical instruments of the world. This is the only shop I know of in the Bay Area where you can find instruments from all over the world including Asian instruments such as the Erhu and Gu Zheng, African instruments such as the Djembe and Doumbeck, and the Austrialian Didgeridoo. They also have instruction materials and other accessories.
They offer piano, violin, and chinese instrument lessons at reasonable prices.
Definitely a place to check out for any world music lover.

I have never had my hair colored and I wanted to try without paying an exhorbitant amount, so I went to the diPietro Todd salon to inquire about being a color model. With full highlights normally costing $195, paying $30 seemed like a deal to me.
I went in for a consultation and luckily for me, one of the colorist trainees was working on full highlights.
She was towards the end of her 2 year training program so I felt pretty comfortable with her doing my color (many complete training elsewhere before they start the diPietro Todd training).
I am still extremely happy with the end results. The only gripe I have is that she had initially told me it would take 2- 2 1/2 hours and it ended up taking nearly 4 hours.

Located at the corner of Sixth and Brannan, the SF Wholesale Flower Mart is where most local florists go during the wee hours of the morning to pick up fresh cut flowers, potted plants, blooming plants, and floral supplies. During those times, you need a special badge to enter, make purchases, and get special vendor deals.
If you have a florist friend, you can tag along with them, but if you don't, the San Francisco Flower Mart is open to the general public Mon thru Sat from 10:00am - 3:00pm. Even without the special discounts, this is still the best deal in town for fresh cut flowers. This is also a great place to pick up vases and other floral display supplies in bulk for cheap.

South Pacific Orchids in Gilroy is one of the leading growers of Phalaenopsis orchids and Asian indoor plants in the Bay Area. As such, you'll find their plants sold at many of the Asian grocery store chains such as Ranch 99.
If you're in the Gilroy area, you should check out their retail location. Considering it's a nursery, the selection isn't the greatest, but you can't beat the prices. Last time I was there, there were tons of blooming plants being sold for cheap. Of course, orchids only bloom once a year these plants wouldn't be in bloom for much longer. However, if you have a green thumb and know how to care for orchids so they will bloom every year, this is a great place to load up on cheap plants.

Richmond New May Wah is a great one-stop shopping place for all your Asian food needs.
It's not as big as a Ranch 99 and doesn't have as great a selection, but if you don't feel like driving out of the city or getting pushed around by tourists in Chinatown, this is a great place to come to pick up everything you need from fresh fruits and veggies to meat and seafood.
Can get crowded on Sat/Sun afternoons and parking isn't exactly the easiest to find.
