The Chicago entertainment scene is SO not complete without checking out this live comedy sketch club! Lorne Michaels from Saturday Night Live comes here to find new talent. There is free improv taken from suggestions from the audience, as well as themed sketches on the events of the day, such as an election or 9/11. I really helps to keep an open mind, not for the easily offended, but it can appeal to a diverse crowd.

In the fairly new area of Chicago known as 'West Loop', this gallery is surrounded by upscale restaurants and lofts for sale. Packer's artists tend to vary in media from oil to collages to sculpture. The art can be a clever puzzle to behold, or disturbing and controversial, but it is rarely boring.

Known for it's old-fashioned, un-multiplex decor, this theater is great for finding foreign, independent, classic, or documentary films. It's been a favorite venue at the Chicago International Film Fest. Michael Moore premiered his Oscar-winning 'Bowling for Columbine' in the U.S. here. There is a LIVE organist at certain shows, a great touch for setting the mood.

Located in the heart of Hyde Park, on the South SIde of Chicago, this is an excellent gateway into not only African-american history, but Chicago history. DuSable is credited with 'discovering' Chicago. There are exhibits on our first black mayor, Harold Washington, and many other lesser known heroes who have contributed to the culture of the city and state.

Housed on the upper level of the 900 N Michigan building, this well-established men's spa caters to the elite. The original began in London and boasts royalty as its clientele. The marble and wood interior might be a bit stuffy for the casual male, but those looking to upgrade their look should be encouraged. The Royalty Package is your best bet if you're looking to look your best: shave, manicure, pedicure, haircut, facial and shoeshine. They also offer massages. The products are sold at many department stores throughout the city. The personal service leaves everyone feeling like royalty!

The pier used to hold flight exercises for the Air Force. According to the information desk, there are still crashed planes at the bottom of the lake to this day. But today it's just a great attraction for the family: kiosks, shops (love the Build-a-Bear) and a good food court with options. Joe's Be-bop has great Southern food and live jazz. The Ferris Wheel can be seen from miles away, and the upper deck has many rides. There's an enclosed botanical garden, the site of many a wedding reception. The Shakespeare Theatre is, for some reason, housed nearby. The Skyline Stage is a covered, open space that hosts many great acts in the summer months. Fireworks every Wednesday (9:30) and Saturday (10:15) from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Free admission is the best part: just hang out and get a great view of the Chicago skyline!

The story is now told so often it's nearly local folklore--Gary Sinise, John Malkovich and friends started this world-class theatre in a church basement over 30 yrs. ago. It now hosts some of the finest productions in the country, indeed the world as some shows have toured overseas. The famous faces come back often--John Mahoney, Gary Sinise, Laurie Metcalfe, Martha Plimpton, John Malkovich and many others. Located on a lovely strip of Halsted St., where you can dine and shop before the show. As with any theatre, some of the shows beg the question 'What are we looking at?' Trust me it's a good sign: a well established theatre not afraid to keep experimenting.

What I love most about this place is the HUGE number of out-of-print and old books available. Easy to lose track of time as you peruse the many shelves and tables crammed with books. It's a bit dim and a little dingy--unlike the hyper bright Borders or Barnes & Noble chain feel, this is for die hard book aficionados who are there for the books, not the extra tall mocha frappacino. This is a classic bookstore--no café with sandwiches, but I don't think the owner would object if you wandered in with your own and perched on a footstool for a while. Watch your wallet though--you almost always leave with more than you expected!

This great nonprofit organization has been around for over 30 years. Beginning in a small church on the U of C's campus, it was one of the first to sponsor free breakfasts for poor youths. Now at it's new digs on Woodlawn, it offers literacy and GED classes to adults who want to improve their reading and earn their GED. With day and evening classes, plus one-on-one tutoring, it's easy to accommodate any schedule. The Family Learning Class is especially great, with parents and children learning together. Also offers job interview training. A great way to change your life, either as an adult learner or a volunteer.

You can't miss Nicole when you enter--she's the beautiful woman in the color garb who greets everyone fortunate enough to enter her gallery. Located in the swanky River North section, it's a lovely space that houses African and Caribbean artists' works. Paintings and sculptures fill each small room--it's one of the larger galleries in the area. One of her most popular artists is Millevoix, a Haitian artist whose colorful works also adorn benches and tables. Truly a great find for those looking to build or add to a collection.
