Berkeley was tough, I don't think I've studied that much in my whole life. I can't believe how much time I spent on some classes only to barely pass the class. Ironically, it seemed that the less time I spent on a class, the better I did. The value in going to Berkeley it's so much the book knowledge you get, but the toughness it teaches you and how to solve problems. It's extremely competitive there though you might have been the smartest one in your high school, you'll meets a whole bunch of people just like that in your classes. I can definitately say that I'm a lot better off for making it through my 4 years there.

She got the french tip (pedicure $20) and they did a good job. It depends on who you get though, cause some are more thorough than others. Usually, if you go early, there's not much of a wait and you'll be in and out in 30-45 minutes. She went back recently to get a pedicure and the lady that worked on her really took care of her and did a thorough job. If you want a good job and a good price, we'd recommend Prime Nails.

The Regan Nursury is pretty much an outdoor store with a lot of plants to choose from. They have everything from roses to trees. I was particularly impressed with their selection of roses which include roses bushes, plants, and trees. We could spent a good hour or so there just walking through the greenhouse. The inside is pretty much just a trailer but houses a cat and a number of cute little trinkets and decorative items.

Let me preface what I say by telling you that you're getting what you pay for or maybe even a little more than what you're paying for. They offer pretty good packages for engagement pictures which include a wedding gown & tux rentals. We were pretty happy with the engagement pictures we got - it took pretty much the whole day and we had an indoor and 3 outdoor location shoots at locations in San Francisco. However, you need to be upfront when you talk about/negotiate your package and make sure they give you everything you ask for. If you don't, you might end up not getting everyting or waiting longer than they promised. If you're okay with that and aren't counting on getting your album delivered by a certain time, then you can get a really good value for engagement photos.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Library was a joint project between San Jose State University and the City of San Jose. It's a 7 or 8 story library which serves both as a public library and also a university library. It's state of the art with live internet ports that you can plug your laptop into and surf the web and plentiful tables to settle down and study at. Some nice touches for students is that you can check out laptops to use while you're there if you don't have one of your own. For me it was an environment that was conducive to studying or writing papers. Nice views on the higher floors and comfortable chairs to sit in and read.

I believe the Sillman Activity Center just opened last year and it's a really nice place to go for exercise classes or swimming. My wife has gone there for a aerobics class which she liked and we've gone there together to go swimming. The locker rooms are pretty nice with plentiful day use lockers and showers. The pool has up to 6 lanes (I think) though most nights when we went, there was an aquatic aerobics class going on so there were only 2 lanes available for lap swimming. it's a tad pricey ($8 a pop for non-newark resident), but is a nice facility.

The Fremont Main Library is a good library on the whole. it's pretty big (2 floors) with a lot of space/tables to sit and study. There is a sizable kids section with a good selection of books, study rooms, and even internet stations. I was able to find a number of book for my research paper on Charles Ives there so the selection is quite good there. The one downside that was that for the more popular books like Harry Potter or the Da Vinci code the waiting list/queue is quite long - I ended up getting it from a different library.

When I first moved to fremont, I was suprised at how big the Christian Book Center is. The Christian book stores that I had been to previously have been roughly half the size of the one. As a result, the selection is very good here. They have lots of music, and have installed listening stations so you can listen to any CD (through scanning the bar code - the music is stored in the system) to see if you like it before you buy it. There selection of books and bibles is also very good, but I usually go for the music. Oh yeah, they also have complimentary gift wrap for things you buy there - very nice.

Compared to Ranch 99, it's bigger than a most of them, but smaller than the bigger stores (milpitas). The hot deli is pretty good, you can get $1 off coupons from shopping at the store redeemable at the hot deli. The one word of caution I'd give you is to be careful of the "2 for $5" type sales. i found out that it doesn't mean it's $2.50 if you only buy one - you end up paying full price if you just buy one, so make sure you buy two if it's "2 for $XX."

I started at San Jose State after a few years of working at my first full time job. My main reason for going back was to get a formal degree in Computer Science (my Bachelor's degree was in Biochem) since I was working in a bioinformatics company. SJSU was a good fit for that since they offered most of the classes I needed in the evening so I could go after work. Well, I ended up getting my BS in CS and an MS in Bio/CS after many years. One of the things that is nice about SJSU is the stuff you learn there is much less theory and much more application (at least in the CS department) which means that you'll probably be able to start using what you learn immediately (in some cases) at work.
