Reminding you of Andy Griffith's Mayberry, the Cola Cafe has a commendable menu, including a basket of fries to die for, fabulous hot-off-the-grill cheeseburgers, and even more interesting items such as turkey sandwiches you'll think came from the deli on a New York street corner. Tucked into an old retail space with rustic wood floors and giant fans whirring to cool the place from its steaming grills, the Cola Cafe is a definite stop in the downtown Louisburg experience. The service is pretty slow, but with the made-to-order menu and plenty of newspapers laying around, you won't mind the wait. You may even run into the mayor--or at least the infamous Franklin County Rescue Squad. Free refills on drinks, too.

While I haven't been to him myself, my father, who is almost 68 and who has had to have eye surgery, and my sister, who is 28 and has had to have some procedures done to her eyes, both highly recommend Dr. Joyner. My father says he has been a patient of Dr. Joyner since 1992, and Dr. Joyner has always given him supreme care, including follow up visits and preventative treatment. My dad would know too--he has diabetes, 20-200 eye sight without glasses, glaucoma, and, as mentioned, a cataract removed. I wouldn't hesitate to go to him based on my dad and sister's recommendation. Hope this helps.

The Coffee Hound Bookshop is the kind of place you would find in the German section of Columbus, Ohio, or perhaps in the quaint streets of downtown Charleston, SC. It has loads of new and used books for all ages, and the prices are pretty decent. Although not at thrift store level (they have to pay the rent somehow), the used books are always nearly new in quality, and the atmosphere is comfy and inviting. There are soft couches inside, and chess tables outside, where you can sit and watch the Republicans go in and out of their Franklin County Headquarters next door, or watch people streaming in and out of the Louisburg Theater on the other side. The coffee isn't the greatest in the world, running you a good buck-twenty five for a regular. But it's decent enough to enjoy while browsing their shelves, and the owners, Tommy & Millie, never yell at you because you read a book without buying it first. It's definitely a hotspot for people interested in poetry & literature, and arts in general for that matter. Nice environment, great people to be around. Not bad coffee. Recommended.

His marketing brochures make him seem top notch, but his actual work on my mouth didn’t impress me one bit. After rubbing his latex-gloved finger over a rough spot in my mouth, he said it didn’t need anything done to it. When I objected, he reluctantly “filed” the spot down, but even after I told him I couldn’t tell the difference, he said I would get used to it. I didn’t. When I found my new dentist, the first thing he did was to tell me I needed to file that same spot down. He did what Dr. Hardy didn’t, and now I can hardly tell the spot is there. Dr. Hardy also didn’t spend a lot of time with me. His dental assistant seemed to make all the calls, and Dr. Hardy simply came in for a quick look around. His quick look around made me do a quick look around for another dentist--even though I have to drive into Wake Forest for him.

After trying numerous dentists in the Raleigh area, I am extremely happy that I found Dr. Dearstyne. He is very good at what he does—cosmetic dentistry, simple to complex repairs, crowns and fillings. He bonded my front tooth and made me feel like I can smile again. He has a very friendly and casual demeanor, and if you visit him more than once, he’ll tell you all about his arrowhead collections and his hikes around town. Almost my entire family now goes to him—brother and sister-in-law and family, etc. We all have nothing but good things to say about him. He’s great.

Looking for a good steak at a decent price? Look no further. Unlike its Barn cousin in Raleigh (in name only, not related) the Angus Junction is actually affordable, although you can purchase add-ons that jack your bill up pretty high; they have a bar and a fairly extensive wine list, but the real flavor is in the t-bones. Their steaks melt in your mouth, and once you eat their filet mignon you’ll never want to visit a chain restaurant again. They have odd hours, so call ahead to make sure they’re open before you drive all the way up from Raleigh.

A not-for-profit thrift store, Safe Space makes money for the Victims of Domestic Abuse Shelter in Franklin County. The good thing about the store is that it is very clean and organized, but the bad thing is that you can find items in the store that have been there literally for months. Books are a little expensive—paperbacks fifty-cents, hardbacks a dollar—but you can get kids’ books for a quarter each, and the selection of books is actually pretty good. The women’s clothing section is about twice the size of the men’s, and I don’t think I’ve ever found a pair of decent shoes that fit me. But the clothes are pretty good, probably because they don’t take clothes donations that are out of season or the slightest bit worn or frayed. You will probably find better thrift stores in Raleigh, but Safe Space will do in a pinch. Closed on Sundays and Mondays.

My wife and I were not impressed with the services we received from Dr. Wooten, one of the neurologists on staff at this office located across the street from Rex Hospital. We spent a lot of money to basically find out nothing new, and he was actually off on his diagnosis of our autistic daughter. Not surprising, as he spent so little time with us. His bedside manner was also lacking, especially for someone who deals with a lot of children.

Paul Adrian’s Plumbing…an interesting phenomenon. This is a one man show, and I do mean show. He’ll come blazing around your street corner in a souped-up converted ambulance. He was prompt and the service seemed ok, but his social skills are lacking and sometimes it was hard to understand him, as he does have an eastern-European accent. We haven’t had any problems with the work he did, and he is licensed as we checked to make sure. Recommended with slight reservations.

Renaissance Man! The only way to describe Dennis Erceg. He holds plumbing, contracting, heating & air, electrical and probably other licenses, and he’s actually really good at what he does. He’s not perfect and he does make mistakes (he broke a pipe while working in our house, causing a small flood). But he makes it right and comes back on his own time if there’s a need. My wife and I highly recommend him. We have already had our parents use him, and they love him too. He’s fair and he explains everything he does item by item. He is sometimes hard to contact, but he always returns your calls when he can, and he’ll be honest with you about when he can get to your project.
