Editorial review from Citysearch 5/4/2013

We brought my daughter's bird, Ruby, to see Dr Jordan because she had developed a feather pulling problem. Dr Jordan recommended some routine tests to determine if the problem was physiological. While he was drawing blood Ruby basically bled out and died right there. At this point I still don't know if she had a problem which prevented the bleeding from stopping or if it was something the doctor did wrong (he was doing the draw from the jugular even though the educational pamphlet he provided us stated that they got the blood by clipping a claw). All I know is that Ruby was a huge part of my daughter's life (they were literally inseparable) so I was trying to do the right thing and now she is gone. I understand that there are risks involved with anything and I am still trying to rationalize where it went wrong. Should we have signed off on his recommended ""routine"" diagnostic steps? Should we have brought her to a different vet instead? Should we have waited a little bit longer to see if she would outgrow the feather plucking? Am I right by blaming myself? If I had decided differently somewhere along the way my daughter would still have her pride and joy to share every waking moment with her. If one good thing can come of this I hope it will be that somebody else will read this review and understand the risk before doing anything ""routine"". more
