On first impression, Shelton's may look like a bit like a ""junk"" shop - and honestly, this is not a place to shop for furniture if you prefer the comfort and ambience of an air-conditioned, spacious, carpeted showroom - but if you're willing to spend some time squeezing through the labyrinthine makeshift aisles and exploring the store's dingy, jam-packed interior, you can find some great deals hidden among the ""junk."" Yesterday, my wife and I picked up a contemporary teak and chrome coffee table, a funky modern teak file cabinet (which will see new life as an end table), a vintage mid-century Stanley walnut credenza and a solid blond wood dining set with six chairs and two extender leaves...all for around $730. Delivery included. Yeah, it took us a few hours...and they all have minor scratches and a few small paint smears. But their bones are good (solid wood), and with a little lemon oil, GooGone, beeswax, touch-up stain and Old English, and a few hours elbow grease, they will look like pieces we might have found - for a lot more money - in some urban-chic consignment shop. Shelton's staff was helpful, friendly and willing to bargain (bring cash if you can - you might get extra discounts for using it.) We worked with Alex mostly, and I highly recommend him. He stayed late to let my wife ""browse"" for additional finds after hours, and then scheduled delivery of everything we bought for 3 p.m. today. If you can, time your visit immediately after they get in new truckloads of furniture (check their Facebook page - they always post when shipments arrive) - the selection and bargains are best then. Shelton's carries a few upholstered items of varying quality, but the best selection - and really, the reason for coming here - is for the miles of aisles of used dressers, hutches, credenzas, bookshelves, headboards and tables. Just be prepared to dig for them.
