HORRIBLE Experience 6/27/2011

I was looking for a speciality bakery for a child's cake and a friend recommended this bakery. I read the reviews and thought I'd give this bakery a try. I wanted a speciality cake - something that I couldn't get at a big chain store/bakery. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a horrible experience. I went to the bakery for a consultation and brought along pictures of the theme that I wanted for my son's cake. The girl that I spoke with made notes and I offered to leave the pictures with her if they needed them. She said it wouldn't be necessary that she could always download similar images if needed. I trusted the bakery to do the job as we discussed and had my mother pick up the cake for me since I was tied up in meetings all day. Unfortunately, once I got home and actually saw the cake, I was furious. There was NOTHING on the cake that we had discussed other than the color of the background icing. When I called the bakery to discuss the situation with them, the girl mentioned that when she saw the finished cake that she noticed none of the elements that we discussed were actually ON the cake and had asked the person decorating it about this. She said that the decorator felt that cake would have looked too ""crowded"". I ordered a half sheet which should have provided plenty of room and the decorator LITERALLY took up 90% of the space writing the largest happy birthday greeting that I have ever seen on a cake. Naturally, anything else would look crowded once you've wasted the entire decorating space on a cake. Honestly there was not ONE SINGLE element that I asked for drawn on the cake. I had provided AT MY OWN EXPENSE small action figures to go on the cake. Again literally all they did was place the action figures on the cake and write happy birthday ridiciously large. I could have bought a better looking cake at WALMART! There was absolutely nothing to distinguish it from a box store cake and, in fact, most of the box store cakes I've seen recently looked a lot better than my cake and probably cost a fraction of the price. Since my mother had picked it up, I did not have time to take it back to the bakery before my son's party. I was stuck with a overpriced, plain-looking cake which did not taste any better than your average run-of-the-mill cake. Buyer beware! I had high hopes that I had found a great little bakery - WRONG! It was horrible customer service - last time I checked the CUSTOMER ordering and PAYING for an item should get what they actually ordered! It's still unbelievable to me that they did not do ANYTHING that I asked. I wished that I could have been able to pick the cake up myself because I would have not paid for it the way it was. When I called them, the only option they offered was for me to bring it back up early the next morning before my son's party to ""see what they could do"". However, the whole point of picking it up the afternoon before was because I did NOT have time the morning of the party. Ultimately I did not have time the day of the party to try to have the cake fixed and they NEVER called me to follow up or offer any other type of resolution. For the reviewer that complained that another unsatisfied customer must have been TOO picky, maybe that person just expected that their cake would have actually looked as promised (or at the very least slightly resembling what they'd discussed with the bakery). I don't think wanting good customer service and expecting people to actually take pride in their work is being ""too picky""! more
