Bad vintage instrument ""selling"" experiences. 4/13/2010

I've now twice tried to sell vintage guitars/basses at this store with no success. The first time I had 3 beautiful PRS guitars, the second time a '71 Fender Jazz Bass. Both times the guy in the store, who was very nice, got on the phone and spoke with ""the owner."" I was given incredibly lowball offers for my instruments over the phone by ""the owner"" who never actually saw them. On my last trip the store clerk unscrewed the neck, pickguard and control plate to ""look under the hood,"" all cool in a transaction such as this. The neck indeed had the '71 stamp on it and he then told me that after speaking with ""the owner,"" they felt the body wasn't an original '71, perhaps a Fender re-issue body? I told him I had bought the bass at a very legitimate music store in SLC 15 yrs. ago. ""It was sold to me as a ""71 and it still is."" He then offered me $700 for it. Very not cool. IMO, ""the owner,"" without even SEEING guitars, lowballs vintage instruments and then hangs them up on his wall for inflated prices. STAY AWAY...btw, I went on to LA and successfully sold my gear at Norm's Rare Guitars, a REAL music shop. Cons: The owner is an ""invisible"" buyer. more
