Rip off! 8/1/2008

I am pretty upset about the scam Chapel Hill Tire attempted to run on me when I brought my car in for a new timing belt and water pump (preventative maintenance at 120,000). I had emailed them in advance for a quote on the timing belt - around $380 (which I knew sounded pretty low). When I dropped the car off I had a feeling the price was going to sky rocket - I got a call 2 hours later with a quote of $902 with the water pump included! I refused, picked up the car and started calling for quotes - a local garage at $580 and a dealership at $715. At Chapel Hill Tire, the price of parts were quoted almost double and the labor $100+ more then what I ended up paying. With auto care there is a huge trust issue for customers that I feel was completely taken advanage of by Chapel Hill Tire. Luckily my auto work was preventative and I was not stranded having to get the work done there, just inconvenienced. I am not sure if the workers get payed more if they get away with charging customers more but if so, that policy is extremely unfair in this type of market. Call around for quotes before bringing your car there - go to Pittsboro Auto Care instead. more
