We've been taking our pets to NWHPC since 1993. Yes, Dr. Kelly is terse and sometimes kind of rude, but he's also brilliant. We once took our dog to another clinic for a second opinion on a major surgery that Dr. Kelly had recommended. The second clinic was pretty sure that surgery was the best option, but they wanted to consult with an expert in that area first--Dr. Kelly! They do push a lot of services and meds, but I really feel it's more for prevention than upping the bottom line. If there's a chance that your pet might be in pain and the pain med is safe to use, why not use it, just in case? Those extra bloodwork panels can lead to early diagnosis of diseases that can be treated if found early. I've had good experiences with nearly every doctor there, and they've taken care of my dog and many cats. I've had 2 cats become deathly ill for unexplained reasons. With the first, they took the time to run extra tests, consulted with other vets across the country, sent samples in to the research school for analysis, even did exploratory surgery. After a week, they finally said 'We're sorry, we just don't know'. Not that I was happy to hear this result of course, but their honesty impressed me. And they actually told me they could keep him there and continue care at a $100/day, but instead they wanted to show me how to do it all myself, so that I could take my kitty home. They could have kept him there for that extra money, but didn't. (Max got better, BTW!) The other cat was not able to be saved, as he got sick so fast, but they tried their best--Dr. Buell even offered her own cat as a donor for a transfusion. Even after Shadow passed, they still sent his bloodwork off for analysis, to find out what went wrong. He had become allergic to his own bloodcells, a totally random thing that could not have been cured. I appreciated knowing that we had done nothing wrong. Their knowledge and network of experts on call is worth the extra expense for me.
