By day, Higley's is a haven for quiet readers, browsers, and sippers -- with stuffed chairs and couches, shelves of used books (stocked by Book Alley in Pasadena), tables and chairs with chessboards and unfolded newspapers. At night, the crowds gather inside and on the sidewalk. Higley offers a variety of desserts and coffees, and an cup you can fill (and refill for 50 cents) yourself at the stand of coffee-filled thermoses at the counter.
