This gallery, located in pioneer square, is a fabulous showcase of top notch NW coast artwork. Pieces range from tiny stone carvings to totem poles and masks. for most people, this gallery is eye candy for traditional and contemporary artwork and for collectors, it is probably the best in the state. i have not found the staff to be as chatty as those in galleries in Vancouver, B.C. but they are informative and willing to explain the significance of various pieces. i enjoy taking visitors through this gallery and love the contemporary spin demonstrated in many works. previous years' lecture series have been wonderful, the website suggests they will resume in the fall of 2005.

I love Wild Ginger. three words: spicy green beans. amazing and the leftover that people keep picking at even when they are stuffed. for how big this place is and the number of people they churn through i think the quality is consistant and excellent. it is hard to get in although the satay bar is always open first come first serve and the entire menu is available. considering that their daily special sheet is longer than most restaurants' entire menus, go with lots of people so you can share family style and taste lots of different things. their dessert menu is pretty short (three things) but my understanding is The Triple Door (which is owned by the Wild Ginger people and right underneath the restaurant) has a fabulous dessert chef who bakes and makes magic.
Believe it or not, this is a child friendly place as well. they have lots of high chairs and enough buzz to mask any child's noise.

both my husband and i get our haircut by Lita at Bocz Salon in downtown seattle. my husband justifies the cost by pointing out he has super fine hair and trims anywhere else look like rats have been chewing on his hair. i go because she decides on the style for me and seems to take into account how my hair has or will respond to her clipping. my hairstyle changes by the month and i've liked everything Lita has tried so far. a couple years ago she was voted top ten hair stylists in Seattle Magazine (or something like that). she takes longer than most haircutters and therefore is usually running a tad late. $65-$75 for hair cuts.

this is not a greasy spoon in case you are looking for a five egg omelet with the works but Macrina's does have delicious baked goods, a few yummy breakfast items like french toast and oatmeal and lunch items. brunch is served on the weekends. i've only eaten at the belltown location (not the queen anne) and i've always enjoyed their sandwiches, soups and salads which involve their delicious bread in some presentation. as a bakery, macrina's provides bread to numerous restaurants in seattle and sells a wide variety of loaves, buns and baked goods. check out their website for hours and menu items. this is also a great place to get wedding/special occasion cakes.

i've become a big fan of the gymboree play classes offered at sandpoint/magnuson park. and even though i'm frustrated that my daughter is crawling out of her crib before she is 2 years old, she is doing it perfectly without a single thud or bang and she has stuck the landing every time. all of these skills i attribute to the time she has spent at gymboree classes climbing, jumping, balancing, falling, bouncing, rolling, sliding, swinging, hanging and having fun. most of the classes are in the mornings with some evening and weekend classes as well. they last 45 minutes and have some elements that repeat from week to week like song and bubble time. kids love hearing the bells to come to the circle for bubbles and seem to really love the anticipation. music and art classes are offered here as well. for the summer they are offering a 2 for the price of 1 deal where your child can either take 2 classes (eg. one play and one art) a week or you can enroll 2 siblings.

This store has a huge variety of outdoor and sporting fabrics like fleece, gore-tex, nylon, canvas, mesh and cordura plus all the accouterments you might need to make your own recreational equipment. I have gone here to find replacement buckles, nylon fabric to make a new ground cloth for my tent, canvas for some beach bags and fleece for kiddie hats. The staff is knowledgable and generally friendly and they have all the materials you might need for your project including the patterns. Who knows, you just might walk out with everything you need to make your own three season tent!

I took four months of prenatal yoga at the seattle holistic center at their wallingford branch and really enjoyed it. The renowned leader of the program is colette (who is also a nurse) although there are several other excellent instructors. Each class starts with a round of how-do-you-do: "hello, my name is jane and i'm 26 weeks pregnant and my (insert body part) is killing me". Colette is very touchy feely and empathetic but also very helpful. She will suggest drinking this kind of tea, taking this vitamin or eating watermelon as a remedy or if you are having a physical pain like a tight back she will recommend specific stretches. This part is helpful in that either you feel pretty darn lucky your ______ aren't hurting or you hear about similar pains/discomforts and some possible solutions. Then there is usually 90 minutes of stretching and toning (right down to your pelvic floor) where the instructor offers great stretches to address all the pains mentioned before and to help prepare you for childbirth.
The center offers a deep schedule of classes and once you purchase your ten(?) classes you can pretty much go to any session you want. I went twice a week and felt great.
I would say these classes are a moderate work out. Obviously not much cardio-vascular but I was definitely sore after using different muscles.

Justin O'Hara and his team rebuilt a second story deck for us two summers ago and I think they did a good job. Jason came and gave us an estimate and sketched out our ideas for the railing. Their prices seemed average for deck builders and significantly less than contractors or home remodel companies who were about 50% more. Justin and his small crew were very quick and friendly. The demolition was fast with little impact on our yard and the rebuilding went quickly as well. We chose to use iron wood (ipe) for the decking and cedar for the railings. They also enclosed the 4x4 's that are holding up the deck, making them look like columns and added shingles to match the house. Not quite the attention to detail you might get with a remodel company and any effort to match the style of the house came from us rather than them. For a basic deck I think they do a great job, for something more elaborate or designed I would look for a larger company or someone who emphasized style more.

We became big fans of Buena Vista last summer because they have excellent mojitos that are perfect under one of the umbrella adorned tables on their big patio. There are about 10 round tables outside and i've seen them set up long tables for bigger groups. inside they have more seating and salsa dancing with live music. I think the food is quite good and you can get it to go in case you want to dock your boat and have a floating picnic.,

Andrew Kirk who owns Brick By Brick has done the tuck and pointing on two chimneys for me (at two different houses), has rebuilt a fire box and rebuilt a chimney from the roofline up. I didn't know a whole lot about this field so he was very patient about expaining everything to me and advising me on how to proceed. He is reliable and communicated well regarding when he would arrive to work and when he would be back if the project needed time to dry or set. He also was on the lookout of ways i could save money like by recycling a chimney cap he had just removed from a women who was converting her chimney to work with a gas stove.
It was with great excitement that Andrew and I watched my newly built chimney gently rock and sway (they way it should) during the earthquake in 2001. He knew it would stand so maybe it was the prospect of new business, as several chimneys around us crumbled, that excited him.
