Located in the Wallingford Center, Imagination Toys is a super place to get art and party supplies, puzzles, and quality toys for all ages. i just went there to get birthday gifts and had the best luck and success! i vaguely explained what i was looking for and the woman working there took me on a quick lap and pointed out half a dozen great ideas.
Also- they have boxes of kids' dress-up clothes that you can rent for $20 a day. you get two boxes- a girls box and a boys box and she said they are great for 3-6 year olds!

often i refer to the food served at bars as barf-ood. murphy's is above that and has great burgers and fries and yummy dark beers on tap. i especially like the secret garden burger with is served with a yummy chutney on it. it is a darkish irish pub that sometimes attracts a UW crowd but mostly it's neighbors. they used to have a trivia night (and might still) and on the weekends they have live music that is usually folk or irish but lends itself well to the atmosphere. there is a dartboard and a fireplace with cozy leather chairs.

even though we no longer live in wallingford, we still take our drycleaning there. the owner is very friendly and even carries my clothes out to my car when i pick up with toddler in tow. the location is right in the heart of wallingford- close to wells fargo bank, the beer store and the wine store. one reason we always take our clothes here is that he has never broken a button. our clothes always come back without the stains they went in with and even the women's shirts come back neatly pressed (by hand).

i've taken my dog to Northwest Veterinary Hospital for years and all the vets are very nice, good with the animals and able to clearly explain what they are doing or what is wrong and how to fix it. i've even been able to get my dog in on short notice- as in 'hi my dog has a bloody ear.... 15 minutes? sure, i can be there". The waiting room is nice, they sell dog and cat food and basic products, the receptionist always makes you feel like you have the cutest, smartest or sweetest animal ("who wants a cookie?"). They rarely use the metal tables in the exam rooms and in fact now they have the kind that fold up onto the wall which i think greatly decreases the animal's stress. I've never had a major pet emergency or illness so I can't speak to that aspect but for routine health I think they are great.

Finally, a sophisticated yet comfortable dining spot in the 15th Avenue neighborhood of Capitol Hill. Move past the standard leather-seat booths and this fantastic modern crystal chandalier and there is a groovy bar, some more cozy seating and wide doors out to the awesome outddor patio. The brick patio is covered with clear arching plastic (like what you see at university village) which means you hear the city and the ambient light comes it and yet it's dry. Two very cool propane heaters hang above diners and ambient groove music overflowed from the bar. I had a very nice plate of seared ahi with wild rice and a lovely balsamic vinegar glaze of some sort ($15) and the warm chocolate cake ($5) which was pretty good in a fluffy cake sort of way (not the dense fudge-like cake so many places are serving). i'm psyched to have this new joint in my neighborhood- Broadway is such a pain for parking and we've needed something like 22 Doors here on 15th.
7/29 just went again and had an excellent crab cake and a bite of a very delicious hamburger.

my friend takes her cats to kristi's because they have long hair and shed a lot. she gets them shaved and she says the groomer is very friendly and has lots of insight into the cats' different personalities. in other words, it seems like she knows how they tick and what she can do to make their visit as low stress as possible. i've taken my dog there to get bathed, shaved, toenails clipped and they do a great job. i'm pretty sure my dog would not endorse them because she becomes a shaking mass of freaked out mutt as soon as we walk within a one block radius but she is wacked out to begin with and not trusted to be reasonable.
as far as your matted cat fur emergancy, i'm pretty sure they will cut or shave the matts out. i used to use WD-40 to get mats out of horses's tails but thats a pretty different kind of hair... good luck!

This restaurant is in the pike/pine corridor of restaurants, clubs and shops on capitol hill. Most recently we ducked in here after an exhausting afternoon at the flower and garden show at the convention center. The food is consistantly very good and the menu difficult to choose from. One surprise was the artichoke tea which actually tasted a bit like straw but was very good. They have a great mix of vegetarian and meaty/fishy dishes and fabulous combinations of tradtional veitnamese flavors.

Tojo is the japanese version of the soup nazi. if you choose to sit at the bar, your best (and perhaps only) bet is to let Tojo plan your menu. he will ask if you have any allergies or don't like anything in particular and then begin his culinary journey. he will tell you which items you may dip in soy sauce and which items should be eaten as served. he is a character and the photo of him laughing on the website (tojos.com) is perfect. his dishes are amazing and a typical dinner includes a combination of sushi and japanese dishes. i remember black cod served in a crab shell that positively melted in my mouth. if you are taking a weekend in vancouver, splurge on tojo's cuisine. this restaurant is just south (accross the bridge) from vancouver but it doesn't seem like i can enter a vancouver, canada address
