i made an outing this morning to third place books in ravenna to sell a big box of books, browse a bit and get a mid-morning coffee and snack. it took nearly an hour to get a price on what they would pay for about 2/3 of the books i brought in and i thought the prices were a bit lower then what i have gotten elsewhere- max price seemed to be $2 even for beautiful hardback coffetable books. the star of the outing was the scone with the blob of raspberry jam in the middle- almost like a biscuit because it so melted in my mouth. all the baking and espresso-ing is from the Honey Bear bakery who runs the small cafe. nice cozy chairs by a fireplace, good window bar stools for musing over the weather, good coffee and nice service. some nights they have open mic music and a variety of performances like acoustic guitar.

we ate here using a valentines day gift certificate and had a great meal. it was a friday night and packed but we did manage to find two open seats at the bar. my in-laws love this place because of the extensive and very nice wine menu and because it is close to the husky sporting events they attend (but not the kind of place frequented by young huskies). lots of steak options but also very tempting specials and seafood options. my husband had a righteous burger with first rate fries and i opted for the grilled veggie plate with a side 5oz steak. the veggie plate was incredible- three huge skewers of grilled balsamic veggies and another big pile of steamed veggies plus two super yummy potato cakes (latkes). way more than i could eat but super for lunch the next day. dinner with drinks for two was around $55.

i eagerly awaited for my daughter to turn two so we could utilize the free child care at the university village QFC and it is so awesome to finally be "in". i am a big QFC fan, i like their prices and selection. this one isn't as big as the new capitol hill QFC but has a good selection of natural foods and organics mixed in with the other products. the lines have always been shorter than those at whole foods and the child care option makes it super attractive. the room is right next to the check out lines and is filled with different spaces with a huge variety of toys and play things. books, activity tables, art projects, dolls, dress up... the staff person (usually tina when we've been there) is a grown up who seems to enjoy interacting with the kids (rather than some bored college kid). they have a tight security system of matching wrist bands and signing in and out which is reassuring. they will also page you if there is a problem.

Look out! i do NOT recommend dr. larsen. i saw dr. larsen for a couple years and he did fine on the routine stuff but...when i finally had a cavity he drilled and filled the hole TWICE, each time failing to numb my mouth sufficiently and somehow not getting the cavity cleaned out. then he drilled in such a way that he either cracked my tooth or broke through to the root which led to a massive infection and subsequent root canal (also with multiple attempts at drilling before i was numb). weeks after the root canal i was still in so much pain, as in can't chew a banana, that i went back and he discovered he had botched the job. there was no way i was going to let HIM redo the root canal so i went to an endodontic specialist who speculated that dr. larsen didn't have sufficient experience with the more major dental procedures.
i think a lot of people recommend him because he is a nice guy and they give you gifts for making referrals (wine or chocolates). now i recommend dr. jana raisler who i have reviewed on judy's book.

i used to have a custom wedding invitation business and was always so happy when clients chose to have their invitations professionally addressed because Pascale does such an amazing job. her styles range from very traditional to fonts that are more like stylized handwriting. her prices seemed very reasonable: in 2001 she was charging $2-2.50 an envelope for traditional/formal lettering and $1.25 for simpler styles. additionally pascale will do lettering for programs, placecards, poems or any other special document.

This was a referral from a co-worker and i couldn't be happier! i've gone several times to see Dr. Scott Jamieson and always been pleased. After the arsenal of tests he is very thorough in explaining what he sees, what it should or shouldn't look like, what it means for my vision and general eye health now and in the future. this is probably pretty standard but he also is a complete crack-up and overall very pleasant.
on my last visit i asked him about lasik for my husband and he said he thinks its a great thing but be careful where you go to get it. he does some work for a downtown insurance company so he routinely examines people who have had BAD lasik experiences from BAD "laser experts". He offers exams for people considering lasik and will tell them how good or poor of a candidate they are, what they can expect in outcome (you'll still need bi-focals as you get older), and which of three lasik centers he recommends for your eye type and condition (apparently cornea thickness among other factors is important).

we used rebecca at EscrowLink at the request of our new home's seller and liked the experience so much we requested to use her when we sold our old house a month later. she is also a (non-practicing) real estate attorney so is knowledgable about legal issues relating to the minutia of a home transfer. i found her to be thorough and a clear communicator. we had some good laughs and i left with a clear understanding of the paperwork and the transaction. for good or bad, she will also make her non-partisian law knowledge available to your buyer or seller so expect all parties to be held to a high standard of conduct.

i had a similar experience with the other reviewers (and thanks judysbook for this recommendation). we boxed up almost everything and they did a great job moving all our special things. no wall bumps and no dings or dents on the furniture. i'm giving them a 4 because when it came time to sign off on the work time had been added for the crew driving from the office (kent?) to our house and back (1 hr total at $137/hour). we were also a bit more than the estimate because they had to make two trips- the negative being it added time but we also had them throw every other odd thing into the truck on the second trip to take advantage of their braun. super nice guys (3 of them) who worked long, hard and fast. packing tip: i would highly recommend that any box with spillables (like olive oil, cleaning supplies, bathroom stuff) or that needs to stay oriented a specific way be labeled VERY clearly with arrows on all sides.

i researched all the different companies who offer portable storage units (the big boxes they drop off at your house/apt) and chose to use hansen brothers. their boxes are the "portabox" you've perhaps seen in your neighborhood. anyhow, chose them because they were the most flexible with drop off and pick up times and how long we had to fill them before they picked them up. not knowing how much stuff we would pile in them we ordered two and ulitmately only filled one and only had to pay for that one. the boxes are sturdy and waterproof and the delivery fellow was incredibly accomodating as he arranged them in the alley (or maybe the driveway, how about on this ivy...). with both the drop off and delivery we could call as soon as we were ready for the boxes to be taken away which was nice since we didn't know how long it would take us to load or unload. if we had wanted to we could call ahead and go visit our box at the storage place to pull out anything free of charge.
