FAO has turned into a tourist attraction in New York City. It is one of the biggest toy stores that I have been to and is definitely a fun place to tour. There are a lot of activities and sights inside that will entertain kids. However, when it comes to actually purchasing things, FAO Schwarz is not the place to go. The merchandise there is heavily overpriced and most items are a rip off. You can get most of the things at other places for much cheaper and are probably better off doing so.
If you are in the area and have some spare time, it's definitely a fun place to walk through, but leave your wallets at home.

The Flatotel is not like any of the big chains out there. It is a unique place and the decor is really cool. My dad stays there all the time when he is in town on business. The room are extremely nice and spacious. There's a desk in every (or at least most) rooms along with a Herman Miller "Aeron" chair, by far the most comfortable desk chair. Rooms range from regular to suite. There is a concierge and a bar downstairs to help you if you need. You can definitely find cheaper, but prices are reasonable for New York City. If you're looking for something a little different, but still convenient and upscale, check out the Flatotel.

The Children's Place is a great place to check out if you are looking for clothing for toddlers and young kids. They have a really great selection to choose from and the prices are very low. They usually have sales, but even the normal prices are extremely low. Quality of the clothing there is good and the styles are cool. Definitely worth a look. I've gotten a lot of stuff for my brother as he was growing up and it was always a favorite for my mom and her friends when they were buying clothes for their kids.

Wegman’s is a great supermarket. I was introduced to it when I was up in Ithaca. It is definitely higher end, but the prices on most things are very reasonable. They have a lot of extra services in addition to food shopping. The bakery and deli are great and they also have a ready-to-eat section where you have a buffet available and also a pasta station. The pasta station is great and I would definitely recommend trying this. It’s great if you aren’t in the mood to cook dinner or for lunch after you go grocery shopping. You can also get your dry cleaning done at Wegman’s and picture development as well. Overall, I really enjoyed going to Wegman’s. The store is very clean and the produce is of high quality. If there is one by you, I would definitely check it out.

Rockaway is very similar to Sleepy’s. They have a good selection and are relatively reputable, but the prices listed are way too high and you shouldn’t pay anything close to that. Again, do not settle for anything less than 40% off the retail price. They will try to close the sale by saying they’ll give you 10% off now, but you can do much better. Ultimately, these companies, Rockaway and Sleepy’s, carry the same mattresses, but under different names (that’s how they can make their guarantees and never have to pay on them). You need to just go back and forth between the two and you will whittle away at the price each and every time.
With Rockaway, you also have to be careful to check the mattress once it’s delivered. When my parents bought a mattress, they picked one out at the store and then, the company delivered a different mattress. This wasn’t a mistake. They had discontinued the mattress my parents asked for and decided to just give something else without asking or getting approval. Be very careful that the mattress you picked out is the mattress they deliver. Check the tags before you sign the delivery slip. If it’s not the mattress you ordered, send it back with the delivery people and put a stop payment on your credit card (which you should always use when buying a mattress).

Sleepy’s is a good place to shop for mattresses. It is one of the larger stores and has locations throughout New York and New Jersey. They have a good selection including Seamen’s, Serta, and King Koil.
DO NOT LET YOURSELF GET RIPPED OFF!
Prices for mattresses are incredibly inflated. Sleepy’s is one of these stores. They prey on uninformed consumers who don’t do their research and know how much they should be paying. Their goal is to keep you in the store and they will throw out offers of 10% off if you buy now, something like that. Don’t fall for this. The minimum discount off the retail price that you should accept is 40%. When I recently went mattress shopping, this was the starting point for negotiation. Ultimately, I got a $2000 mattress for $800 (i.e. 60%).
You need to shop around between Sleepy’s, Rockaway, and Dial-a-mattress. Also, call 1-800-Sleepy’s because they offer basically the same mattress, but you can often get it cheaper.

Watch World is a nice store to check out if you are in the market for a new watch. If you are looking for something high-end, this probably isn’t the store for you, but if you are looking for a mid-priced watch to wear casually or even something for work or to go out, this is a good place to go to. They have many different companies and styles. I’ve gotten a Fossil watch there and have had it for over four years. They have a large selection of Fossil watches, but also have other brands. They also sell children’s watches. Prices are very reasonable and comparable to other stores that sell similar watches.

Radisson is a great hotel to stay in if you are in the area on business or vacation. The location is very good with access to the main highway close by. The hotel itself is well-maintained and clean. I found the rooms to be very decent and the staff works very hard to keep the place clean. There was a swimming pool which comes in handy when you travel with children.

It is a big store with a huge selection. It is really “one stop shopping” for all of your baby needs. Prices are very reasonable and the store layout is great. This is the bank that I decided to open an account with when I moved into New York City. I researched a few of them and Washington Mutual definitely offers a lot of benefits and doesn’t charge you a lot of fees. They have free online banking and bill pay and free checking. Savings account is free, but I needed to either keep $500 in it all the time or agree to an automatic transfer from my checking account every month.
Customer service is pretty good. When I opened the account, the representative wasn’t extremely knowledgeable, but this might have simply been an anomaly.
Washington Mutual is a very good bank to have in New York. They have locations all around the city. If you are looking for a bank, I would definitely consider this one.
