Westfield Shoppingtown is one of the best malls that I have ever been to. It is located in Paramus off of Route 4 and 17.
It is a huge mall, big enough that people actually come there on winter mornings to run inside because it is too cold outside.
Every major store that you can think of, ranging from department stores like Nordstrom, Macy's, and JC Penny to clothing stores like Banana Republic, Gap, Express, and Abercrombie is there.
The mall is very nicely laid out and is also well maintained. It gets really busy on Saturdays, especially since it is located in Bergen County which has blue laws restricting store openings on Sundays.
There is also a nice food court with tons of options from Taco Bell to sushi. You can pretty much find almost anything that you are looking for at the mall.

Bostonian is a small shoe store inside the Garden State Mall. It has a decent size selection of men's dress shoes. The prices are a bit high unless they have a sale going on, in which case you can usually find some good deals or at the very least get the shoes at the same price as other stores.
The shoes themselves are high quality and the styles are pretty trendy. Whenever I am at the mall, I will usually stop by to check out the shoes there, although I haven't gotten anything from there in quite a while. I would suggest looking at Century 21 if it is near you for better deals or checking out the bigger department stores when they have sales.

This is by far one of the most creative stores I have seen in a long time. The way it basically works is that you build a bear from scratch. You choose the kind of animal you want (no, not just bears) and then you literally build it up from scratch. You get to stuff it and can put in a sound (something like "I Love You:"). Then you get to put on accessories and name it.
I think it is a great present, but in my opinion, if you are going to get this for a children, you should take them and let them do it because at least half the fun is the actual experience of building it and going through the process. Kids that I've seen do this have this huge smile on their face and enjoy every second of it.

Bath & Body Works is a wonderful for those looking for great smelling bath products. As a guy, I don't necessarily shop there a lot, but I have gone in a few times (mostly at the insistence of my girlfriend) and have gotten a few things there for her as a present.
They have a nice selection n of different fragrances and smells to choose from. I liked that you could create an entire "kit" of things like lotion, fragrance spray, and moisturizer from the same fragrance.
Prices are affordable for most items. This is predominantly a store for women, but men can always keep it in mind if they are looking for a nice present.

Tracy's a great store for all those occasions that require a greeting card, from birthdays and weddings to Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. The store has a huge selection of cards to choose from. The majority of the cards that I've gotten from there have been birthday cards. They have funny ones as well as serious and touching cards to choose from.
The staff is extremely nice and always willing to lend a hand.
Prices are exactly what you would expect to pay for a greeting card.
The store also sells some stuffed animals, picture frames, and other small items..

The Cornell Alumni Magazine is a great way to stay connected to Cornell, Ithaca, and your classmates. The magazine is organized really well in my opinion because it covers both local news and national news relating to the University and alumni. I really liked one of their past issues that tried to shed some light on President Lehman's disagreement with the Board of Trustees and what led to his resignation.
There are also class notes and updates on each year. I especially like the anouncements section that talks about local lectures, events, and gatherings that are taking place in Ithaca, New York City, as well as other cities. It is a nice and easy way to stay connected.

Steve and Barrys is a relatively new store that sells tons of university apparel. The greatest thing about the store is that everything is $9.98 or less! How can you go wrong with that? I think this is something unique because most college giftshops sell university merchandise for an exhorbitant amount (something like $50 for a sweatshirt or what not).
If you go to a big school, especially a public university or one with a good sports team, Steve & Barry's probably has your school. They only have a few items from my alma mater but I hear they are expanding and trying to get as many universities as possible.

New York Sports Club is one of the bigger gyms in the city with many locations throughout the boroughs. I would say that size is definitely one of the biggest advantages because even if you are away or go somewhere else in the city, you can usually find one close by.
The equipment there is state of the art and the nice thing is that you can watch television while you use the treadmills.
Price is very high and I would only recommend this for people who are serious about going to a gym and going often. If you are just starting or aren't resolute, you might want to start with something smaller and less expensive so you don't just waste your money.

Sprint has tried to enter the wireless market in Ithaca and so far has done a truley poor job. When I was shopping for a new carrier over two years ago, I went into the store and was very impressed by Sprint. They said that they were building a tower in Ithaca that should be operational soon and that the tower would give Sprint great coverage and reception. Well, over two years later, I don't think that tower is operational yet and the service, to put it bluntly, sucks.
My friend, despite my warnings, got Sprint. The only place he got reception in our huge apartment was in the corner by the window. He used to sit on the ledge, curled up in the corner everytime he had to use the phone.
Meanwhile, the rest of us in the apartment had Verizon and got coverage everywhere in the apartment.
Bottom line, unless Sprint has actually began using the tower, don't believe anything they tell you. Don't commit yourself with their assurances that it will be operational soon. Go with Verizon.

I started out my first year in Ithaca with AT&T Wireless. That was an absolutely horrendous experience and I couldn't wait to get rid of their utterly terrible service. I checked around and the majority of people that I knew either had or had switched to Verizon for as their wireless carrier.
I decided to follow suit and it has been great. I actually get service in Ithaca now. It is better in some areas, but coverage throughout is pretty good.
If you are coming up and are looking, this is definitely your best bet. Only other alternative to consider is Cingular. Sprint also has a store there and tries to lure you in saying that they are building a tower in Ithaca and just waiting for clearance. I heard that story my second year and have heard that Sprint is still spewing that garbage. Unless there is a fully functional working tower, don't listen to what they say.
Verizon might be a bit on the expensive side, but since most people, especially at Cornell, have it, you end up using a lot of "IN" minutes which are free anyway so you can actually downgrade to a cheaper plan.
