ACT's Young Conservatory theater is not a summer camp or an after-school program, it's an intense (but still fun) program for serious young actors. The classes are all taught by seasoned professionals who specialize in working with young people, and students learn serious acting methods and skills.
I took classes at ACT almost a decade ago, and the skills that I learned - even though I no longer do theater - serve me to this day. I got voice training, scene analysis, physical acting and clowning and more.
Whether your child (age 9-19) just wants to have fun in the world of theater or is exploring the idea of a career in acting (or scriptwriting), this is a professional, respectful program and the benefits will stay with them no matter what course they choose to follow.

The main floor of Bear Basics is all CAL products - t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, key chains, even baby clothes - celebrate your soon-to-be alma matter or send a gift home to the folks to make paying your tuition a bit less painful.
Downstairs is a mecca of t-shirts sporting flippant sayings and pop-culture references. Head to the second floor to Futura for hip women's clothes and tada! all your shopping is done.

I got my first non-ear body piercing at Zebra, I was 17 and my mom had to come with me to sign the consent form (they're strict on that, so don't try to sneak by)...memories!
Zebra is a professional body art studio, offering piercing and tattoos. I can't speak of the tattooing personally, except to say that the equipment will ALWAYS be sterile and clean, as with the piercing. Both the store and the studio are clean and well lit, with electric dental chairs to sit in while you get the work done, which made me feel much more relaxed and secure than some other places I've gone. The staff is knowledgeable and professional, and you'll walk out with all the proper cleaning supplies and an instruction sheet on how to care for your new piercing or tattoo - and stop in or call with any additional questions.
Not ready for the needle? Check out their array of normal and piercing jewelry, tobacco accessories and fetish wear.
Avoid the first couple weeks that school is in over at UC Berkeley, it's gets crowded with kids rebelling in permanent ink.

Love cotton? Sensitive skin? Need some basic colored shirts? Check out Cotton Basics, which, as the name suggests, will round out your wardrobe with comfortable, cotton standards. The colors go beyond your average black, white and blues, which is nice when you need to spice up outfits you already own. There are also pants, dresses, and, I believe, even denim overalls (in adult sizes!).

The first page of Good Vibrations Website states that "We believe that sexual pleasure is everyone's birthright". At their store, it's one right you won't have to fight for. Good Vibrations is an open, inclusive, educationally minded adult store that's been offering comfortable access to adult toys, book and sexual education - with workshops (run by trained educators) ranging from how to best enjoy their products, to safer sex practices, to the role of communication and physiological response in sexual pleasure.
The store is well lit, comfortable and you'll get a chance to wander around and check out the floor models of the products before you buy.
Also ask about their video rental program. All movies are screened and reviewed by the staff for a top quality selection that caters to all interests.

I can't tell you what kind of shampoo is in my shower right now, but I can list my three favorite Body Time scents from 10 years ago - Black Rose, Infinite and Jasmine.
Body Time specializes in customizing your bath products with their selection of essential oils - you can get massage oil, a variety of lotions, shampoos, soaps and more, all custom scented with a pre-made scent or your own special combination. The staff will help you decide what products are best for you skin, and you can complete the experience with fluffy robes, eye pillows, rubber duckies and other bathing "extras". They also make great gift baskets for everyone from Grandma to the new baby in your life.
It can get a little expensive, but for an individual impression that lasts, it's worth it.

I've been in Moe's Books on NUMEROUS occasions, and I still get the feeling that I've never seen it all. That may be because I always get distracted by the great titles and bargains, but it may be because it is actually endless.
There's a HUGE selection of used, sale and rare books, with a special focus on art books. The children's section is also fantastic.

I grew up going to Cody's, and I still hold it as the epitome of a great independent, community bookstore. It's clean, HUGE, well lit and organized. They host numerous author events, have a great magazine section, and the staff is always friendly, helpful and honestly enthusiastic.
But it's a little more than that too. You get the feeling that the store actually belongs to you and the community.. The website has photos of the renovations happening and their newest location, as well as work being done on a school they support. There's a great little corner (at least in the Telegraph location) of small and independent press publications, and I actually had a chapbook that I xeroxed myself on consignment there many years ago.
I especially like the shelf in the front with autographed copies of new books, it gives a great little kick if you're looking for a gift.

As a high school history teacher once told me, he knew he was in Berkeley when he looked up and saw a store called "Rasputin's". The real guy might have been creepy, but the music store is awesome (and don't forget to pick up a t-shirt with everyone's favorite hard-to-kill historical figure on it!). Huge selection of used and new CDs, vinyl, videos and more in every genre you can think of. Study hard before you go - the website offers reviews written by the staff, a chance to win tickets to their live shows, and information about the store.
Also, buy new CDs, or even sell your old ones, and Rasputin's will give you a voucher to take to your favorite school. Wait, you can make money selling your used music AND give back to the kids...yeah, this place is cool.

With more songs total than a 1,000,000 GB iPod (okay, I don't know if that's actually true, I didn't do the math...) you WILL find music you like at Amoeba. Classical, bluegrass, pop, rock, industrial/gothic (it has it's own section!), punk, indie (REAL indie, bands the stocking people at Tower have never even heard of!), videos, vinyl - all new and used - posters and...TAPES. What other store still carries cassette tapes? Best yet, go shopping when you're broke - bring your old music and trade it in (you'll get more in store credit than you will in cash)
