A recommedation from my wife's medical school friend, Matt Hanasono, who went on to become a plastic surgeon. He's the former chairman of the plastic surgery department where Matt did his residency and he's one of three plastic surgeons Matt recommends in New York.

I'm actually recommending Dr. Kwan because my wife Tina (a Doctor) went to medical school with a plastic surgeon, Matthew Hanasono, who recommends Dr. Kwan. According to Matt, "he does a lot of eyelid surgery (and actually specializes in asian eyelids) and is very good."

Dim Sum Go Go offers above average dim sum (at all times), plus more good Chinese food. But what really sets it apart is the look and feel of the place which, very unusually for a New York Chinese restaurant, is a hip aesthetic which you would expect to find in the Village rather than Chinatown. But you will pay for the difference. It's a little pricier than most restaurants in Chinatown.

On a 2 day trip to New York many years ago, I was meeting three different friends for three different meals (lunch, a late night dinner, and brunch). Since I was the visitor, I let them suggest the place: my only criteria were that it had to be good, affordable to someone on a tight budget, and convenient to where I was staying on the Upper West Side.
As it turned, each of the three friends independently suggested E.J.'s, and I happily went along each time. And now that I live on the Upper East Side, I frequent the East Side version, which is pretty much exactly the same.
E.J.'s is a diner that serves diner food that is a cut above what you will typically find (but at prices that are only slightly higher).

Had the $5.95 lunch buffet today at Chennai Gardens. And while the food wasn't the best South Indian I have ever tasted (perhaps because it is impossible for a buffet to match that), it was quite good. And at that price, it's difficult to imagine getting more bang for your buck in NYC.
Also it's worth noting that the restaurant was completely packed (including many Indian families) and that the (pastel) decor and feel is both hipper and more pleasant that your typical Indian restaurant.

Gum Fung is located where KB Gardens used to be and is now the destination dim sum in New York. When you go, be sure and try to get seated in the main dining hall (which should be possible without too long a wait since it probably seats 300), rather than the "side rooms" upstair. The carts will come more frequently, the selection will be better, and the food will be warmer.
Thought Gum Fung was a good place to bring kids. Not only is it big enough for kids to have fun walking around, but on the Sunday we went they were blowing up balloons for anyone who asked.
Final nice thing. There is a huge municipal parking lot pretty much across the street, so it is possible to drive there.

For us, J.G. Melon is the embodiment of the classic Yogi Berra line: it's so popular, no one goes there anymore.
We have tried to go to J.G. Melon's at least five times. We have only succeeded once (an early lunch), since every other time we tried we were confronted by at least an hour wait.
But we did have great burgers the time we went. Good prices too.

We've become huge fans of Fresh Direct. And given who my wife is, that is high praise indeed. Tina is serious about good quality food, and she is serious about getting good value. In our pre-Fresh Direct days, she used to regularly shop at 2-3 different stores a night to make sure she was getting the best value. Now, we generally just do Fresh Direct. The food is the same quality as the higher end New York grocery stores (e.g. Grace's, Fairway, Whole Foods) and the prices much better (even including the $5 shipping charge). Even the produce and meat has passed Tina's exacting standards. We strongly recommend them.

A little out of our normal budget range, but when my parents are in town...
One other potential upside or downside to mention (depending on your perspective): it's a loud and singles feeling environment. But then again, so is much of New York.

For the uninitiated, the Burger Joint can be hard to find. It's actually located inside the Parker-Meridien hotel with no direct entrance from the street. And even once you're inside the hotel, it can be tricky since it is literally a hole-in-the-wall hidden behind a curtain with practically no signage. Then, once you get inside, don't be surprised if you have to wait in line (you order fast food style from a counter) and can't find a table, since there are so few of them.
So is it worth the effort? For these burgers at these prices, absolutely! According to many folks (including my brother), the Burger Joint has the best burgers in New York (the fries and milkshakes are great too). And the prices simply can't be beat.
The Burger Joint is an absolute must for cheap eats lovers. And if you can't get a table, remember that Central Park is just a couple of blocks away.
