Hammersley's is my favorite Boston restaurant, the place I always had my Dad treat me to when I lived in Boston. Of course, I was living on a City Year salary those days, so don't be intimidated: the prices are very reasonable for a top of the line bistro. My mouth waters just thinking about their mushrooms and Gordon Hammersley's famous chicken. But everything is delicious. And the service and atmosphere are almost first rate. Plus, you can't beat it's location in the heart of the South End (though parking can be an issue, so plan to valet). Just a great place.

You don't go to Crepes on Cole for fine dining, but it's a great place to hang out and people watch. But the biggest attraction is the bang for the buck. The portions are so enormous (think salads big enough for 3 people) that you don't understand how they can stay in business. An important Cole Valley institution.

I'm not one of these people who feels a deep obligation to independent book stores. In general, I think the combination of Borders, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon has been great for readers. Book shopping is a hundred times better in most places than it was when I was young.
All that said, I have to tell you that Wordsworth is still my favorite book store. I always enjoy browsing there because the staff seems to do a better job of selecting interesting books to display than any other place I have been. I'm always encountering stuff I wouldn't have found myself but am glad to pick up, page through, and occasionally buy. They just have great taste there.

It seems like almost everyone I know in Boston has moved to JP in the last ten years, and I think Bella Luna is part of the reason why. It's not for the food (though it is good). It's not for the funky atmosphere (though it can't help but make you smile). It's not even for the super cool candlepin bowling alley down in the Milky Way Lanes below the restaurant.Bella Luna is ultimately so wonderful because it's clearly a neighborhood institution, and it both reflects and reenforces the diversity and community that is at the heart of the attraction of JP.(Full Disclosure: I was one of the original investors in Bella Luna and remain friends with the owners (who are great!))

Along with bookstores, Cambridge is the center of the ice cream universe, and Herrel's is the king of Cambridge ice cream. Of course, I have to be honest and admit that it's been ten years since I have eaten there, so you are partly getting fond memories of my college years (when I knew many people who worked there). Nevertheless, I'm still convinced your taste buds won't go wrong there.
