I have to certainly STRONGLY suggest that if your kids can qualify for this program (they take PSAT scores to see if you meet the requirements for certain classes) that they certainly do it at least one summer. I went first in the summer of 7th grade and found myself loving it and returned for 2 more summers. It was a great opportunity for me to get ahead and score credit to place out of classes in high school. They have a large variety of classes ranging from all of the social sciences to math to english to natural sciences. I ended up taking a programming class, a math class, and an advanced biology class while I was there. The campus is quite safe and the activities are organized very well and we had no incidents in any of my stays there. The sessions last for several weeks so I definitely had a chance to bond with a lot of friends which I still keep in touch with to this date. As expected you do board in the very nice Northwestern dorms. Some are co-ed by floor while some are co-ed by wings. Definitely a great experience!

This is a great summer camp directed towards teens in middle school and early high school. I went myself about 9-10 yrs ago and I had a great time. The camp is offered by the University of Michigan so you get to take advantage of all of the great computer clusters and technology of the campus. I stayed at the time in North Campus in Bursley Hall and it was a safe walking distance to class. They are now offering a lot more classes than they originally offered me. This is all expected with the great advances in software and the internet. At the time I went, Netscape was still the predominant web browser. There are a lot of other scheduled activities besides classes that the kids participate in. The food was actually pretty decent for camp food too.

This place has to be the Krispy Kreme quality of cheesecakes. They offer a large variety of different types of cakes from chocholate to white to different flavored cheesecakes. The only cakes I have purchased from there was a chocolate and multiple flavored cheesecakes. My overall favorite is the marbled cheesecake. Their cakes are definitely decorative and delicious. I have been to weddings that have purchased their cakes and I am really impressed with the work they make. I'd at least try a cheesecake pie on your first visit.

Living on an island really limits your options for dry-cleaning. For all of the Grosse Ile, you have pretty much only 2 options for dry cleaning and laundry services: Ever-Ready or Prestige. I have taken my dry cleaning to be done at Ever-Ready since it was conveniently located on the island and Prestige's very odd location and gravel parking makes anyone hesitant to go in. Don't let the dingy appearance and setting intimidate you from going in. You'll soon regret it if you don't because Prestige offers the same quality as Ever-Ready for cheaper prices. Unless youre a hermit on the island, Prestige's off island location shouldnt become a problem since the location is on the way in and out of the island. Definitely a hidden gem.

One of the most common subjects of art in most of the carmel galleries is landscape. I do appreciate some of the fine work but no matter how interesting the composition can be I prefer to see some variety in a gallery. Gallerie Amsterdam definitely had the variety that made my eye wander with interest from artist to artist. At the time I visited they had a wide variety of mediums from oils to photography to watercolors to metalworking to stone sculptures. I'm not sure whether or not the prices truly reflected the quality in each of the crafts but at least this was an exhibit to appreciate all works of art.

This is definitely a must-see location if you're in the San Diego area. It's not too far from the Pacific Beach and Mission Beach communities. Also this is right next to UCSD campus. The place is known for the parasailing school that sits on the top of the hill. If you drop in at a reasonable hour you're likely to see several people parasailing at once. I'm not quite current on the price if you want to actually do parasailing but I'm pretty sure you can at least expect triple digits. You've got a great view of the entire coast line and there is even a trail along the side that takes you down to a surfers point. The trail is rather long and narrow so make sure you have the appropriate footwear. Definitely bring a jacket as the wind can make things a bit chilly. It is gravel and dirt parking so watch out if you got a really nice car.

If you're in San Diego and you can afford an entire day, make sure you plan for a day with great sunny weather. The balboa park is a great free attraction. There are a handful of museums in the park as well some of the most beautiful gardens. They have various greenhouses housing the nicest orchids and anything from cactus to palm tree gardens. Expect to do a bit of walking since the park is rather large. Helps to bring along some bottled water for the day. While some of the museums cost money there are still plenty of free exhibits to visit. Some of the architecture is amazing and the masonry/stone work is breath-taking. If you do go visit, dont forget to find the one significant landmark. There is a tower overlooking the park which is the same tower of the Xanadu mansion in Citizen Kane. I'm a movie buff so I definitely had to photograph myself in front of this landmark.

Being a college student in Oakland for 5 years, you definitely get to know all of the best beer distributors. For the most part, the UBC was a mediocre but convenient local stop after Beer World got shut down. I would recommend going there to pick up a case if you're too lazy to go to the better Craig Distributing Co. on Craig St. or Whitehall Beverage Co. (which has the best case prices). The attendants become real nasty after 10pm especially if you're a guy. My ID was confiscated after the attendant thought it was a fake and I had to go through the hassle of calling the Pittsburgh police to come over and verify the legality of my ID. Through this whole time, one of the attendants was harassing one of my friends and trying to instigate a fight. Needless to say the attendant was dumbstruck when the cop was able to get my ID back for me. Definitely not worth the time!

I originally came here looking for only balloons to accompany a Valentine's day gift but I ended up finding a lot more than I expected. When they say headquarters they really mean headquarters. This place had a large variety of gift wrap, different boxes for your gifts, candles, cards, party accessories for every occasion, stuffed animals, etc. I wanted to drop by for 10 minutes only but I ended up browsing for an hour. They have a large balloon section in the back of the store and for a small fee will inflate all your balloons for free. They had heavy duty latex and balloons with messages imprinted on them. You'll definitely find all of the necessary party decorations for every occasion. If only they had party food at this place too, then it would be the complete one-stop party shop.

Joe Louis Arena - Home to the Detroit Red Wings. The name Hockeytown is most appropriate. It's always a great atmosphere with some of the die-hard hockey fans. Most games are alway sold to 3/4 capacity. If you're not into the game at least you can do a lot of people watching. This place is definitely the hangout as the games draw people as far as 2-3 hrs away to come down to the Joe. You can even watch away games on Joe Vision on the big video box. This is also one of the few arenas that sell the cheapest standing area tickets. The dedicated parking structure has more than enough space for all of the ticket holders. Also plenty of people park on the street a couple blocks down. Since the games are very popular, there are always tens of police officers at hand to see that people get home safely despite Detroit's crime reputation. If you're even visiting for just a weekend, make sure to go to a home game. JLA also hosts different concerts though the sound stage isnt that great.
