Dr. Donna Smith has seen my kids since they were infants. She is warm, thoughtful, smart and entirely trustworthy/capable.

This is a wonderful place for locals, as well as out-of-town visitors. Go now to see the wild-flower area in nearly full bloom.

I know Le Peep from my hometown, Denver. I always have liked their breakfast, so we were pretty sure this would be good, too.
Happily it was just what we needed on a late Sunday morning. This part of Phoenix is eerily quiet on a weekend, but we were glad to not have to wait for a table. The food was predictable, but good, breakfast foods: omelets, pancakes, etc.
The coffee, I have to say, was AWEFUL, as they made it with tap water. (Phoenix tap water tastes salty, so you get salty coffee - nasty!)
But, we had a sunny, shaded outdoor breakfast. So, in spite of the bad coffee, I liked this place and our meal.

I have to say, I really was relieved to finally walk into a restaurant in Scottsdale/Phoenix that did not have a corporate-marketing designed theme!!!!
This restaurant is a cross between an authentic diner and an old-time chicken-fried-steak kind of place. Now, I would never have eaten here except the ladies in the hat store next door recommended it. It just looked like it would be smokey.
But, in we went for lunch, and I had a great hamburger and the rest of us had sandwiches. All the food was just fine. And, we could get a glass of wine or something with our meal.
The mats are paper with a pink pony, which was probably my favorite part of the decor! The waitress was friendly and helpful. The place was not over-packed. In fact, I think this place is a bit of a sleeper, except it has just been written up by Phoenix Magazine, and so will likely be getting more business now.

Have you been to the chain Cheese Cake Factory? Well, the corporate restaurant designers took that concept, made it look "Mexican," and called it Abuelo's.
Now, the American perception of what is Mexican and reality may be, oh, a little different. But, if you like chain and theme restaurants, you will like this place.
The interior looks like a pseudo courtyard. The noise-level is quite high due to this. The "charm" evoked by the fake blue-sky is thus a little lessened.
The menu is extensive but offers the American/safe versions of Mexican food. The servings are obscenely huge. Seriously, it was very unappetizing to see these troughs they call plates come to the table.
The food was, well, safe. Nothing was terrible/nothing was really great. The fajitas are your safest bet, but they arrived with a mountain of onions and one tiny slice of bell pepper. Share this with at least one other person.

Well, granted it is salad you start with. But, the all-you-can-eat concept still makes me think of the movie, "Super-Size Me." There is nothing special about the food here, except that it seems to have been put out recently and is fairly fresh. Oh, and quantity. Did I mention there is a lot of food?
The concept is you walk through a salad bar and load up your plate with as much stuff as you want. Then you go to the pasta/pizza/soup/bread/dessert line to get more food. Again, it all seems fresh/recently made. But, we are talking QUANTITY here, and there is no promise of quality, much less organic.
The interior is, well, a lot like a Payless Shoe Store. Do you like bright lights and row upon row of tables? Do you like loud? Do you like a chow-down focus?
The other oddity is that you can not get a glass of wine with your dinner. Coke? Sure.
Ok. Maybe I am the odd one here. I just really thought this was a weird, weird concept.

Ok, you said no junk. I can attest that the set of chairs + ottoman we bought from Target fools EVERYONE. They are solid, the colors are good, and the materials are great. The styling is such that everyone remarks on them - "WHERE did you get those???" I really need to come up with a better response than the truth.
Prices are reasonable, too. Here is the link: http://www.target.com/gp/browse.html/ref=sc_iw_l_2/602-3983983-6017421?%5Fencoding=UTF8&node=1038614

I have spring/summer fever, so here is something I think about when pining for all days to be like today... Summer chamber music concerts + picnic + blanket on a lawn. We have been going to the concerts the festival puts on at Lakeside School for many years.
The festival staff can be, er, snotty about kids attending the concert inside until the kids look old enough (to them) to behave. So, I recommend staying outside where the crowd is cordial and the field is available if your kid needs to run dinner off. (Why pay for that treatment?) And, besides, the picnic aspect one of the best parts!

I took my kids to classes here when they were toddlers - the class was a little like Gymboree without the annoying clown. I believe classes now start at age three.
The "class" is really a group of moms and tots playing in a semi-structured way that facilitates building social and large-motor skills. (Plus, the moms get to hash out who has the worst sleep deprivation.)
Beyond kid and adult classes, the Spectrum Dance Theatre is a non-profit and offers contempory dance performances. Here is what their website says about their vision:
To move the arts, in particular dance, from the marginal, ancillary, and periphery of the activities of communities and into their center. To have the dance and the arts be an integral partner in all civic dialogues concerning what makes and contributes to healthy communities. As well as to have the arts be considered as part of the solution to the myriad new and ongoing challenges that our communities are presented with now and into the future.

Did you go to a school here in Seattle?
Schools, especially public schools, are integral to the quality of our neighborhoods and city. In fact, many will say the public schools are essential to democracy.
Without getting too soap-boxey, we need to care about this institution whether we have children or not.
Stay informed (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/news/local/links/schoolclosure16.html ), and remember, next time there is a vote giving you the opportunity to support the schools with a levy or new tax, consider seriously the impact of your choice.
