"As you know, I've made the tough decision to commit American troops into harm's way. It's the toughest decision a President can ever make, but I want you to know that I tried diplomacy -- in other words, a President has got to be able to say to the American people, diplomacy didn't work."

There's Crush, Crave, Cave, Dave: the crowd of one-word named restaurants in Seattle. Trendy to the hilt.
And, then there's Lark.
The ambience is calm with a subtle touch of hip. The restaurant is inside an old, not huge building that looks to be from the early 20th century. They have stripped out the inside to the 2x4s holding up the roof and added some paneling, a few curtains, some really interesting paintings.
The crowd is casual/chic, to coin a cliche. The staff is courteous, helpful and knowledgable. The wine-by-the-glass list is not huge but seemed to have pretty good basics.
Dinner is served tapas-style, and yes, it can add up. The server recommended 2 dishes per person, but I think you can get by with 3 dishes for 2 people and that way you have room for the cheese course or dessert (or both). We were too full for the cheeses, but did try the rhubarb crisp, which was Amazing: not too sweet, and served with real cream.
Oh dear, I talked about the dessert and did not describe the dinner. We ordered: the morels/pasta plate (divine, earthy, very fresh), the scallop tartar (which had a wee bit too much fennel for our taste), the striped bass (divine grilled with a touch of butter and shallots) and the quail (perfectly served with watercress). Portion sizes were appropriate.
Parking is free if you score a street spot after 6pm. Location is on 12th across from Seattle U.
This is, by far, my favorite restaurant in Seattle.

There are probably used bookstores that have lower prices out there. But, I like Magus for it's location and for it's good selection of used kids' books. Plus, it is near some good pho restaurants!

Last night we went to see Rostropovich conduct the symphony, playing 20th century Russian greats, Shotakovich and Prokofiev. Rostropovich is also known as one of the world's greatest cellists (check out his recordings of the Bach cello concertos). His and the orchestra's performance last night was AMAZING - three standing ovations. His charm and enthusiasm were palpable, and the orchestra clearly enjoyed performing under his leadership. BRAVO!!!
Now, the SAM could take a lesson here, in that Seattle is a major metropolitan city that deserves to see and hear the greats. The Seattle Symphony give us these greats on a regular basis, all season long. The SAM, well, they do a lot of laurel resting. And, their laurels ain't that great.
So, residents of Seattle, support the arts and enjoy the greats. And, send letters to the ones that are slacking!

It may be a good idea to make a reservation as Cafe Impromptu is popular.

Good at Baja: tacos, burritos are my faves.
PCC is just across the street if you need to get some groceries and the troll is a short walk away!
Salud!
