Dr. Petersen has been my husband's family's dentist for years. Now he's my dentist too and he's great. The family got to know him because he was their babysitter when in grad school 15-20 years ago (my husband is 36). He's a lovely guy and has a very solid practice. I recommend it.

My boss is a long-time (now former) trustee of Whitman College and she always stays at the Marcus Whitman. She describes it as a lovely historic hotel - and she has high standards. I just looked it up online - see www.marcuswhitmanhotel.com. Seems like the perfect place for folks who want reliable comfort, a good location and charm.

Cafe Lulu is a cute little cafe on Latona (right next to the Latona Tavern) near Greenlake. If you're looking for a snack after a power-walk, this is the place. I just had an egg bagel there (i'm partial to them) and it was delicious. They also serve essential baking pastries and oatmeal and have great coffee. The perfect little neighborhood place.

I'm a car neglecter (I admit it) and my '95 Jetta is a beater that i more-or-less ignore (which i get away with because it usually runs great). but when it started to have little nagging problems i asked my mother-in-law where to go and she recommended eurocar. they were exactly what i was hoping for. when i called the people were nice, we arranged a time for me to come in, they did a thorough check and fixed most everything in a day for a reasonable price. like a good doctor, what they couldn't fix (and were puzzled by) they were honest about and talked me through what they'd tried, what they could try and what each additional bit of work would cost. the whole experience was easy and now my car runs better (if not perfectly) and i feel like i got good value for money. next time i have a problem (or need routine maintenance) i'm going back to eurocar.

My favorite Seattle sushi place is Chiso in Fremont. Maybe you can argue that some other place is better in this or that way, but Chiso wins best all-around in my book. The environment is cozy, yet stylish. The sushi is fresh and delicious, the service prompt and courteous, it's not hard to get a table (unlike some places), and parking is no big challenge. Plus Fremont is fairly central (at least for north Seattle folks). Plus it's the best quality to price ratio I know (excellent sushi for mid-level prices).

Clover (in old ballard) is my new favorite kids store. It's great for gifts because they have both clothes and toys for a variety of ages. There isn't a big inventory, but what's there is of a high quality. For example, I love the petit bateau onesies (a splurge, but a nice gift) as well as the onsies with images of ghandi, einstein, and james brown. For older kids there are art supplies, legos, great t-shirts and games. Full disclosure - the owner is a friend of a friend and a very cool person who's good to support.

Tangletown is across the street (practically) from my other favorite bar - Luau. They're both relaxed and good for thirty-somethings. What I like about Tangletown is its versatility. You can go there for an after-work drink with friends, or for dinner (good burgers, fish and chips, salads, etc.). Plus it's big and open and restaurant-y enough that it's kid-friendly. I'm about to have a kid and I'm thinking "where am I going to go now?" The answer is Tangletown. Current enough I don't feel like a fuddy-duddy, but friendly and mellow enough for a new babe.

When I worked downtown I ate at Three Girls almost every day. My favorite is tuna on soudough baguette, but all sandwiches are good and their soups - incredible. Plus the old school lunch counter is awesome and I love the guys (yes, they are guys) who take the sandwich orders if you stand in line. Nice guys. Great quality. Good value. Plus it's in the market! What could be better?

Luau is probably my favorite bar. Near Green Lake, it is great for 30-somethings - the faux-polynesian decor makes it fun (it isn't taken seriously enough to be cheesy) and principally caters to moderatly hip 30-somethings. It's fun and festive but low key. Great for an after-work drink with a friend. And they have a small outdoor area for the rare nice day.
