Forget Integral Yoga, it's too funky and too expensive. Forget those small mom-and-pop health food stores, they have no selection and they're even MORE expensive. Lifethyme has everything you need and more: every kind of vitamin and supplement...a wide variety of really great fresh and packaged foods...natural health and beauty aids as well as environmentally safe household cleaning products...a knowledgeable staff...hot and cold prepared foods...the best salad bar in town...a fresh juice bar...and sales that are actually sales (as in good prices, not markups slashed to look like markdowns). I'd like to see "bulk buy" merch in bins on the sales floor rather than in the premeasured packets they sell, but they'll ladle out for you whatever quantities you want of beans, dried fruit, nuts, etc. (the bins are in their basement). Caveat emptor: they do sell meat products (organic) so if you're living the ahimsa lifestyle this place isn't for you.

We in New York are deprived when it comes to supermarkets. There is no lack of them but they are so awful - small, often filthy, certainly overpriced. D'ags has beautiful merchandise and it's the only clean supermarket in the West Village but you have to mortgage your home or hand over your first born to shop here, especially for produce. One exception: some of their own brand-name items are good and well-priced - especially meat and baked goods. Otherwise, at these prices you could shop organic, and probably should.

Okay, their prices have gone up, and they removed all the wonderful Frida Kahlo portraits recently, and the staff is sweet but slow -- however, Cafe Frida still rocks. You will find impeccably prepared, fresh food beyond the basics of fajitas and quesadillas to the adventurous and regional (try the seafood soup, a kind of Mexican bouillabaise), some of the best salsa in town, great margaritas made with fresh lime juice for a change...and best of all, it's near the Museum of Natural History, an area notable for its lack of decent and decently priced restaurants.

Why weather the crowds and prices of Broadway when you can see great, intelligent theater for less money and eat at better restaurants to boot!? Cherry Lane gives a platform for both new and established talent, Many greats got their start here. They need money and deserve your support. Located on adorable Commerce Street, this is a destination. Best shows I've seen here; Blown Sideways Through Life, Kiki and Herb, and a musical about women in group therapy.

My neighborhood standbye also happens to have really good, fresh, clean food, cheerful service, quick delivery in a space that's not claustrophobic like most takeout Chinese places in town. Even their "diet" steamed dishes are wonderfully flavorful, with plump, tender veggies and juicy morsels of meat, fish or tofu. At $4.50, the lunch menu is a steal; buy it at 4:00 pm and have it for dinner!
