Here is a lovely family owned chocolate shop specializing in marzipan that has been an UES staple for ages on Second Av between East 84 & 85 Street. Look at all their many creations in their big window at the front of the store. Friendly service. Excellent quality. Lots of different and unique chocolate gifts. Everything looks fresh and tastes delicious. Hard to resist - a chocolate lover's heaven!

Dr. Lao (his full name is Dr. Pairote Laochumroonvorapong) is a very good adult and pediatric dermatologist. He takes his time with patients and is considerate and listens to your concerns and does his exam carefully. You don't feel rushed in his office and he is very approachable and has excellent credentials and is of course, certified by the American Board of Dermatology. Recommended.

Forget Benihana's and theatrical chefs. Come to Haru, a small Japanese restaurant on the Upper East Side for a delightful repast of well prepared Japanese food & very fresh seafood. Beautiful presentation on nice Japanese dishes adds to the enjoyment of partaking a meal here. Always highly rated on Zagat. The restaurant is a little small and can get crowded and noisy at times so try to go a little earlier - they open at 5 except on Sundays when they open at 4:30PM. Service as well as the food is excellent! Highly recommended.

Busy bustling Chinese restaurant - food is a notch up from fast food service as it is nicely prepared with sufficient spices especially Gen. Tso's chicken. Japanese sushi also available and nicely prepared. $5 Lunch special available except on weekends. Service is usually quick though there is a longish wait for fried dumplings. Ask everything to be served as it becomes ready. The wait staff probably pool their tips so there is little personal service since many different people come to your table, whether to clear it, pour water, or serve your meal. There are no extras here - no oranges at the end of the meal, no hot towels, no tablecloths. A bit rushed but there are plenty of tables inside and out so take your time. Come for the food not for the ambiance.

The River Project is a marine science field station and estuarium (a museum showcasing the waters where river water and sea water meet) located on Pier 26 - a short walk from Battery Park. It's free and uncrowded. A good place to bring kids - 10 tanks in the front with shrimp, crabs, seahorses, an eel and other fish like striped bass in their natural water environment. The day we went they had a tank with a large turtle that someone had found in the Hudson River. There are some larger fish in the tanks in the back. Very friendly and informative helpful staff.
They also offer free 20 minute kayaking sessions on the other side of the building.
They get by with grants and donations so please contribute something when you visit.

The Homeland Security Garden at the World Financial Center is a public art project on view from 8/22 - 9/15 by conceptual artist Chang-Jin Lee. It is a collection of items encased in plastic boxes atop an artificial maze which supposedly symbolize safety to the content contributors. The artist has arranged the various objects in rather bizarre combinations - in one box are bottles of spices along side a bottle of 2 cigarettes, in another box, there are various candies, in another a lipstick in the centerfold of a bible. There are no cards explaining why certain items mean "safety" to their contributor. It seems like a collection of things with no real meaning. I was disappointed and could find no significance to the whole exhibit.

Casual family restaurant, nice decor. Reasonably priced menu specializing in good ribs served with cole slaw and large baked potato. Baby back ribs were delicious. Generous portions. Even the small caesar salad is large. Ask for salad dressing on the side since they slather it. Very attentive and friendly service. Manager came by to personally greet diners at each table.

This fairly large Chinese restaurant a short hop away from the hustle and bustle of Main Street is a delight to dine in. A good place to eat if you are visiting someone at the hospital - It is across the street from what was formerly Booth Memorial Hospital and is now New York Hospital of Queens. Recommended dishes include Beef with Chinese Broccoli, Roast Chicken, and Shrimp with Cashews. Stay away from Lemon Chicken which looks too much like Chicken McNuggets. Prices are reasonable and service is excellent.
