In dire need of renovation, this is the only deli on Main Street on Roosevelt Island. If you haven't brought a picnic lunch over from Queens or Manhattan, hold out and go a little further to the supermarket which is bigger and cleaner and probably cheaper. Owner and staff here are okay - they get a lot of business from the kids who play on the sports teams here and the parents who watch them. The place has been cited for sanitation violations and hopefully that will be a wake-up call to clean up the place which is rather untidy.

On a hot summer night, it's fun to stroll along the boardwalk and see the many rides with their colored lights and hear the hawkers and play games a chance ( you could win a giant stuffed Nemo for a quarter a try). Take a thrilling roller coaster in the dark over the ocean or into a fast 360 loop forward and backwards. Plenty of food and Tshirts to buy and you can take the trolley if you get tired. Great way to spend a few hours with the family. Separate fees for waterpark.

The best rooms are oceanview suites with a private (vs. common) balcony where you can sit out and have your breakfast or relax and read a book while you enjoy the sea breeze. Clean and neat. Refrigerator and microwave as well as dishes and cutlery in all rooms. Free breakfast is put out in a tiny room on the main floor and there's a mad rush to grab some before the food (cereal, bagels, juice) runs out. You can use the grill by the small pool if you wish. Supermarket is a few miles away. Pool hours are limited. Irons are available at the main desk for the asking. Owner and staff are friendly and helpful. Short walk to beach.

Crowded bustling casual seaside restaurant. Food is okay but pricey. Expensive dishes like King Crab legs or lobster do not come with any side dishes and if you want the average corn on the cob or cole slaw that come with the other meals, they charge you extra. Coupons for free drinks incl. beer were limited to soda and only Bud even though there was no such disclaimer on the coupon. Long waits. Average service. The best thing about the crab house is the great location and views of the bay. Look for a better place!

A girl-y story - lots of bright colorful fun items for your hair and beauty needs like a $5 set of thermal rollers in different colors which heat up when you blow dry your hair, held in place with Velcro - no clips! They also have a nice assortment of candles, "sugar shoes" also known as flip flops (50% off!) and a variety of hot irons, straighteners, etc . A discreet backroom sells adult items. There's also a Ricky's for the teen set (Lil Ricky's) further uptown. Get ready for Halloween - they usually have a colorful costumed character out front by the door. Lots of costumes/masks/etc inside but it can get expensive!

Don't be put off by the neighborhood or the nondescript storefront - Ring the buzzer next to the bar and enter the factory bakery store. Lighter than Junior's but still creamy and delicious, this cheesecake is fabulous. Made with all natural ingredients. Kosher too. For an extra dollar, they will slice the entire cake and place wax paper in between each slice. Extremely reasonably priced. A treat all will enjoy.

I came across Dr. Lu's name in an article in the Coping section of the NY Times about a woman who became pregnant after seeing him for acupuncture treatments. She had previously had 'traditional' fertility treatments with no success. Somewhat wary of 'alternative medicine practitioners, I was impressed that Dr. Lu is also a licensed MD. Cordial business like staff. Basic rooms. Acupuncture needles placed skillfully and painlessly(!) and left in for 20 minutes (timed precisely) while you peacefully rest on the examining table. I sent a friend there for treatment of eczema who had several acupuncture sessions and took the alternative medicine and tea Dr. Lu prescribed and sold (some conflict of interest there) but it seems to have worked!
Drawbacks - Treatment can become expensive ($40/session) if not covered by insurance. Flyers in office advertising herbals/steroids - who knows if these are safe? Avoid the steroids no matter what the claims!

Walking up the west side esplanade from Battery Park, we came across this hidden outdoor artificial turf playing field where a small team was playing soccer. (Cross Street - W. Houston Street). At first all you see are parked cars on the 2nd and 3rd floors parked around the perimeter and a big Hudson River Trust office bldg but through the middle, you can see a very big outdoor playing field and enter it for FREE! There are new vending machines and clean bathrooms and an immaculate soccer/multiuse field where you can also run or jog around. Inside the office building on the 2nd floor is a small indoor field. Seems like a great place to take kids on a sunny or rainy day to just run about and play safely or for adults looking for a practice field - worth a visit!
