There is a big garage door as part of the entranceway but this is no second rate store but a reasonably priced gourmet food shop. There is a lot of freshly made food such as various types of fresh ravioli, soups, sandwiches/sushi as well as fresh mozzarella cheese. Buy the parmigiana or romano and grate your own - it'll be fresher and cheaper!, also a small selection of meats, good coffee and good soups. The display for the breads could be tidier but the sourdough is good. The flowers are affordable and fresh. There is also produce and fresh herbs abound. The cashiers are affable. Sale items are posted on big posters on the windows and inside on the wall so they're easy to check out.

Fair prices and enough strong careful movers for that heavy bulky item, the piano, whether it is an upright or a baby grand. When you call for an estimate, you need to know whether there are stairs and how many at each location. Also, on the day of the move, make sure you know where they put anything that is removed from the piano (especially the handles for the piano cover and remember to have them put them back on before they leave). Recommended!

Using a space that used to house an indoor kiddie gym, this is now a prosperous and popular indoor doggie gym. Large windows in the front allow passerbys to watch a handler play with the dogs which are grouped by size. Dogs are taken out for a walk a few times/day and staff will also give medicines except for injections. Membership varies according to which package you choose, for example $250/yr which includes 2 overnight stays and a manicure/pedicure plus $31 for day care (7AM - 7 PM) for a small dog like a Maltese. Grooming, overnights, small shop with pet supplies even an adoption program!

Opened in 1999, this store has arranged elegantly designed furniture and neat knick knacks in eye pleasing displays. Can't really envision any of it in the homes I know of but this is a great store (located right under the 59th Street Bridge) to browse in. Uncrowded and no salespeople ready to pounce on you. It is also quite expensive. Staff are coolly helpful. Beautiful flower arrangements, kitchen items, desk accessories, chairs, lamps - all beautifully styled and in vibrant colors. Maybe for getting something for that someone that has everything.

Walgreens enters the UES which already has too many Duane Reade's and CVS stores and there's an Eckerds just down the block from this location. Store is bright and big, staff are okay and generally the store is uncrowded. Yes, you can find a few bargains but often sale items are out of stock. Even after getting a rain check, item may never be in stock again. That's certainly not going to pull more customers into the store. More sale items and faster restocking would improve this discount store's rating.

This large low-key well-lit thrift store near 88 Street on the Upper East Side has two floors. On the main floor, there is a a large selection of women's clothes at unbeatable prices. Look carefully through the racks, mostly arranged by color, You can find some from Gap, Banana Republic, Talbots, Ann Taylor, Ralph Lauren, etc. Different colored plastic tags indicate price. There is usually some color at 1/2 price for the day. On a recent trip, there were dresses for $10 - $12, tops for around $5 as well as shorts, suit jackets and pants. You can donate your Delta Airline frequent flyer miles (minimum donation is 5000 miles) to this great program which helps get patients and their families free airfare for medical treatment. Each round-trip flight requires at least 25,000 donated miles, and if they have a caregiver, 50,000 donated miles are needed to cover two round-trip flights.
Delta will match every five miles you give with 1 more mile (Yes, it would be nice if they could give more miles but they are donating the flights, remember). I met a couple from Alabama who had to get to NY for cancer treatment and their local radio station helped get the word out for listeners to donate miles for them so they could come to NY for free. They never could have made it without those dnors and the Sky Wish program. You probably don't even use your miles anyway so why not help someone in need?

Busy Upper East Side pizzeria/restaurant on the corner of Second Av and 69 Street. Family friendly - plexiglass window for little ones to see the pizzas being made and baked. They serve bread and olive oil (no butter). Salads are ample, enough for two. Caesar salad (insalata romana) is great ($7 or $17 for family size - big enough for 4). Pastas are okay but people come here for the thin-crust pizza which arrives bubbling hot. A large pie starts at about $15 and when you add salad, drinks, appetizers, your bill could be $50+ which is a lot more than you thought you would spend for a night out for pizza so make it an occasion. Service is congenial. Atmosphere is casual.
