I think since Tolbert's down the street added a stage in the back a few years ago and started bringing in bands to play late night on the weekends, I have heard somewhat less about the Back Porch which is a shame. Although I love the fun cover bands that Tolbert's brings in (Petty Theft, the Eagles cover band, Beatles, etc), I also love the old fashioned Texas singer songwriter type which is what the Back Porch is known for.
Definitely a laid back atmosphere, not to say it doesn't get crowded and fun but you can always find a corner to sit in and enjoy the band or go in the other room and just have a couple beers and hang out with friends.
I love the stretch of historic Main Street in Grapevine and I think the Back Porch is a really cool place.
