Are you sick of the mainstream news trying to convince you that current events are happening differently than they really are? Do you ever wish that you could share your perspective? Well, the Big Muddy Independent Media Center is for you! The center's main focus is on preserving free speech, and they have meetings every other week to discuss free speech issues. Currently, they are trying to get enough money raised to publish their independent newspaper, but there are other events there as well. For example, every Friday evening at 7 pm, an independent movie is shown which is open to the public. The Center also hosts art shows and rents out the space to anyone who wants to use it. Let your voice be heard. Be the Media!!

Are you a pagan, wiccan, or just spiritual instead of religious? Do you find your faith in nature instead of in a church? If this is the case, New Ages/Other Worlds is your store. While there are those who would stereotype this store as a "witch's store", this shop caters to people of all alternate faiths. The store carries a large supply of books on wicca, paganism, gnostic Christianity, egyptian spirituality, natural healing, and local interest books. The store also carries a large supply of herbs, teas, and candles that carry spiritual powers. If you are looking to expand your faith outside of mainstream religion, this is your store.

The Book Worm is a local bookstore that features a large selection of used books, local books, and one feature that most bookstores don't have -- a cat!! I had been doing business with the Book Worm for several months when one day I came in to find the owners had rescued a cat from behind their dumpster. As a cat lover myself, I was quite pleased to meet this white fella named Casper. Most of the customers who come to the store ask first where Casper is, then do their shopping. This store provides comfortable chairs to sit down in with Casper, but many patrons plop down on the floor to read their selections. The store offers in store credit or cash for books that are traded, as well as an incentive card where a customer can earn a book bag after $100 of purchases. I have heard that the store is expanding soon, which speaks well of the owners. If you are looking for a business that is both local and very friendly, this is your place.

Rosetta Stone Bookstore is a local business in Southern Illinois that specializes in alternate books, magazines, and movies, as well as promoting local artists. The store got its name from the famous Rosetta Stone, which features Egyptian hieroglyphics and demotic script, as well as Greek koine. The store actively seeks to promote its alternate media as a way for the reader/consumer to expand his/her mind and learn outside the box.

Do you want to take Fido or Fluffy for a walk? Well, Animal Crackers is the perfect place for a break on your path! This store specializes mostly in dogs and provides obedience training, doggy day care, and kennel boarding, but also has a large selection of catt products. I have shopped here for cat food, collars, shampoos, and purifying fountains. The staff is helpful and goes out of their way to help you locate what you are looking for. One word of caution though -- if large dogs scare you, this might not be your place! Owners and staff alike can be seen walking dogs on leashes, but credit must be given because the dogs are well controlled. If you want to support local business and take care of your pet, this is your store.

The International Grocery store was created mainly out of demand by international students studying at SIU wishing to have access to their native cuisine, but the store also has a large American following. Part of the appeal for Americans is access to treats from other countries. A person shopping at this store has access to ginger candies, Danish cookies with fruit filling and chocolate covering, and a large variety of international juices. This store also carries international cheeses, breads, rices, and meats that are made kosher or halal for Muslims. The store also carries toiletries from different countries.

The Neighborhood Co-op is a local grocery store that specializes in organic groceries, health foods, alternate medicine, and promotes local farmers and vendors when possible. This grocery store is different in the sense that shoppers have the option of becoming co-owners with voting power over the future of the store by purchasing a $100 share in the store. This share offers many benefits, one which includes the possiblity of getting a rebate on groceries at the end of the fiscal year.
This store offers beneftis beyond healthful living to the shopper. In fact, I have used this store to purchase natural healing products for my cats, as well as creating a baby shower basket made out of organic baby food (in part) for my sister when she was expecting my nephew. The price for the products are a bit high compared to what you would pay at Kroger or Schnucks but I think it is worth it to pay a bit extra for my health.

I became acquianted with the Longbranch Coffee House when I moved back to Carbondale in 2001. This coffee shop specializes mainly in organic, local, and fairly traded foods and beverages. The shop makes a variety of beverages from the traditional coffees and teas to organic juices and smoothies. The restaurant also has a brunch and lunch menu that has snack food items on it as well. The atmosphere is friendly and a nice place for people such as hippees, liberals, and others that are not interested in going to a traditionally glitzy coffee house.

Global Gourmet is a small restaurant that opened in Carbondale's Town Square about a year and a half ago. The restaurant specializes in multi-cultural foods from all over the world that are made fresh daily. Often, the restaurant's owners use local and/or organic produce in the recipes that they make. Although the food is more self serve in the sense that you heat it up and then eat it either in the restaurant or on tables located by the front of the building, it is excellent!! If you are looking for recipes that feature lamb, chicken, or just plain vegetarian recipes, this is the place for you to eat.
