More
If you live in or around Dupont Circle in Washington and are looking for some plants for your apartment or condo, check out Third Day. Third Day is located near the Dupont North Metro stop, basically at P Street and Dupont Circle. I have no idea if their prices are good, but it's convenient, the folks there are helpful, and the selection is good. They have primarily indoor plants, but also seeds, pots, and pretty much anything else you'd need for taking care of the plants.

Finest cigar aficionados are the only ones who need apply to this high-end cigar store in the heart of Georgetown. Complete, premium cigar and pipe supplies and tobacco available, but you better know what you're talking about before you go in. When I entered and asked a few questions, the salesmen were less than helpful and clearly didn't feel like wasting their time with a naive inquisitor like myself.

More
The urban plant store. They will answer your questions or tell you what you need, give you care and feeding instructions, re-pot in one of their fabulous pots, and send you out the door with a smile. Watch out for mosquitoes in the summer; you're lunch. Garden District seems to specialize in indoor plants, but they have plenty of fertilizer, and can do special orders. This only makes it harder for you when you kill the plants, as you inevitably will, you bad, bad plant parent.

If you want your plants holy, come and get 'em at the Cathedral Greenhouse. No Popeish superstitions here! Their selection is wonderful, the prices are great, the service is friendly, if occasionally overwhelmed, and have I mentioned that it is on the grounds of the National Cathedral? Come for the plants, stay for the great stained glass.

This is my one-stop shop for keymaking in the district because it's close and they have a solid repution. However, I don't usually go in here for more than some nails or screws because the store is too small to have the materials you need for special home projects. But to end on a high note, I will say they have saved me a trip outside the city on a number of occasions when I had to make a repair and needed some nuts and washers. They have an adequate supply of emergency plumbing supplies as well.

More
This place is great for anyone who's just moved into an apartment and needs to start decorating from scratch. The look is very modern and minimalist, with lots of steel, shiny silver furniture, and glass, etc, but as long as you like that look, you will find a lot to like here. Among their usual merchandise are futons of different sizes, lots of bar stools and dining room tables, and a few glass and steel shelving systems and lights.

Tabletop is located right in the heart of Dupont Circle. Like most of the stores in that area, it's not cheap, but it features objects with a very funky and unique sense of style. This is a good place to get an unusual wedding gift for a friend or for a houeswarming present. And since there are so many other stores with similarly attractive and interesting merchandise in the area, you can't go wrong by stopping by when you're in the neighborhood.

More
Urban Essentials is the quintessential store of the new U Street corridor. It's jazzy and modern and hip and fairly expensive to go with that. Still, the collection of furniture is very nice and sleek, as long as you're okay with a fairly modern minimalist look, and if you can afford to pay a bit more than IKEA prices, then this is a good place to have a look. The dining tables and chairs are particularly nice. And there are plenty of other home furnishing stores in the area if you don't find what you need here.
