Emergency Room 5/21/2011

To all of you who are frustrated with the logjams in emergency rooms across the country......it's never going to change until they start throwing out all the people who are sitting there with cold symptoms and boo-boos. I really feel that the ER should be able to tell a patient (or their responsible party) to go home and see a family doctor or a clinic in the morning. Guess what, Mom? If your kid has a cough at 10:00 PM, she had that cough at 2:00 PM......you could have called the doctor. York Hospital does a good job when you consider that 75% (yes, that's right) of their patients are not having a true emergency. I was in and out of the ER with both of my parents over the past 5 years or so, and we've always been seen promptly. One way to tell if a person needs to be in the ER is to listen for them to complain about the wait....if they can complain about it, they just might not be that darn sick. more

patient information 5/4/2011

I just called the floor to see how my father was and was put on hold. (I understand that because I was told that someone that could help me will be right with me.) Someone then returned to me and I asked how he was doing the response was "well I don't know I'm just the secretary" then I ask if he was getting discharged and of course I got the same response" I don't know you must talk to his nurse" and she wasn't very polite through the whole converstion. If the floor staff can't help the patients family then why do they answer the phone. Maybe there should be a nurse answering the phone instead of just a "secretary". Red Lion, PA more

York Hospital Emergency Room 9/10/2005

Well, what can I say? You know when you go to the ER you can expect to wait. I've had the unfortunate "privilege" to visit the York Hospital ER three or four times over the past few years. Never have I had a short wait. The staff has never been what I would call overly friendly or caring. Check in was brusquely handled and you felt like you were a bother. My most recent visit was when my son fractured a bone in his ankle. We waited for about six hours while he sat in pain. He was finally x-rayed and was told that it was a sprain. Two days later we receive a call and are told that they read the x-ray incorrectly and that it was a fracture. So, off we went to the orthopedic specialist to see what could be done. York Hospital ER basically stinks. God forbid I ever have to visit there again. I'll give Memorial Hospital a try next time. Thankfully we have a choice in York! more

Healthcare of York 9/4/2005

York Hospital has been around as long as I can remember. I was born there and am 44 years old. I was a patient when I was 3 years old, I needed to get my tonsils removed. I remember being afraid when I had to stay overnight and my parents had to leave. I also remember being so happy that they let me take my beloved Fifi dog into surgery with me. She was a lavender stuffed poodle. They simply sterilized her as well. This was so thoughtful, don't know if that would happen today. I have had various relatives in York Hospital over the course of the last 6 years and the staff has been nice, but definitely short handed, each year the nursing shortage is apparent at the York Hospital as it is at the nation's hospitals. more
