This is a lovely park and museum complex, presented by the Tribune Foundation, celebrating the life of Col. Robert McCormick, past publisher of the Chicago Tribune. There's lots to see, between Col. McCormick's mansion, kept as a museum, a military museum, plenty of gardens and beautiful grouns. They charge a modest admission for parking, but it's well worth it. I've been twice recently and each time was a joy. We liked the first time so much, we went with my sister-in-law the second time to show her.

This park/museums/gardens are maintained by the (Chicago) Tribune Foundation on property that was owned by Col. Robert McCormick, who was the publisher of the Tribune during the middle part of the 20th century until his death in 1955. I went there with my wife. We toured the mansion, which was fairly interesting, particularly the collections of asntique swords and pistols, along with a HUGE library. The military museum is great because it's set up is such that you get the flavor of what the streets and conditions were for various wars. We walked through an intriguing "Idea garden" which has interesting plants with my personal favorite plot, The Colors of the Big Ten, featuring Orange Marigolds for my Illini. For reasoins I don't fully understand, I seem to have more interest in history as an adult than I did as a child. There's planty of history here. This was a peaceful, enjoyable afternoon and not very expensive. I recommend it highly.

When I was a kid, I went to day camp on the grounds of Cantigny. Built by Colonel McCormick's, the powerhouse behind the Tribune, it has a fantastic WW 2 musuem, and beautiful grounds with tons of flower gardens and walking paths. It also has a Golf Course and restaurent, where you can get a superb, pricey lunch. It use to be free to get in, but now i there is a per car fee. I don't know if they are still there, but there use to be a "playground' of tanks you could climb on. A fun, educational adventure for families.

Cantigny Gardens & Museums is another great place to take the family when you have an afternoon free. There are beautiful gardens to stroll through and a small museum to explore when you get hot (or just interested in history). The best part is the old cannons on the property. The kids love climbing all over and exploring them. It makes for a fun afternoon.

Cantigny has it all. The wonderful private golf course with reception hall is only the beginning of the great things Cantigny has to offer. The gardens always have something in bloom and many beautiful, diverse places to spend time relaxing and enjoying the beauty. There is also a historical museum on the grounds featuring different war memorials and exhibits. They also offer tours of the grounds as well as the mansion. This is the most beauiful place in the area.

Cantigy Foundation is a days adventure. There is a museum complete with a movie theater for your enjoyment. The grounds are beautiful. All varieties of flowers and walking paths. There are cannons located in different areas. My boys used to climb on them and had a wonderful time. This is quite educational and a must to see. The cost is reasonable.
