This coffee house is overhyped. There are a bunch of post-college 20 somethings sitting around drinking over-priced coffee on uncomfortable seats. Most of the time you won't even have a table in the near proximity to put your beverage down on. There is also a full service bar which is actually more comfortable to sit at than the comfy couches. Basic food is available but it's not good. Service is VERY bad and SLOW. Some nights they have free music but it's so crowded and loud that it's almost not enjoyable. One good thing about this place is that the entire front of the shop opens up when there is nice weather and you can people watch if you get a seat close enough. Plus the coffee isn't that great and by the time it arrives it's cold.

Penang serves a three course lunch special for $9.95 with delightfully hearty portions, soup, and a choice of chicken satays, spring rolls or shrimp. The courses came quickly, with my bowl of soup almost beating me to the table. The servers were efficient at each stage of the meal, and present without being invasive. Outside seating at tables under large umbrellas was very comfortable and tucked into the Dupont Circle sidewalk traffic, yet removed enough from its frenetic pace to enjoy tasty Malaysian food.

Pumpernickels is quite possibly the best deli in the area. With a NY style deli feel - and quality food - at an affordable price - its hard to beat.
They have a full range of sandwiches and salads, and cater specifically to vegetarians and vegans offering non-meat versions of many of their sandwiches.
Surprisingly, the also offer very high quality NY style pizza - which i have found to be a rarity here in DC. The place is small - there isn't a whole lot of room, but it is well worth the trip.
Its located in the Chevy Chase area of DC - very close to the border of MD and DC.

If you're looking for a tapas place that is a bit off the beaten path and not quite as overrun as Jaleo (no offense to Jaleo - it's definitely one of my favorites!), Bambule gets my vote.
The sangria is strong and fruity. The tapas are a bit overpriced, but amazingly delicious. There's a decent selection, and the wait staff is attentive.
For dessert, try the profiteroles...it's like heaven on your plate....guaranteed happiness.
Also, my friends and I loved that there was a live band.

If I could eat at Tenpenh every night I would!
The people who own DC Coast and Ceiba (two of my other favorites) somehow got things just right at Tenpenh. They always have small surprises like a sampling of soup or a small appetizer between courses. The desserts are also amazing. But I must say that the number one, not-to-be-topped item on the menu is the red Thai curry shrimp, a pineapple/coconut curry concoction that will knock your socks off with flavor.
Try tenpenh for your next birthday or special occasion. It's right at the corner of Tenth and Pennsylvania downtown. They also have gift cards that you can order online that can be used at any of the three sister restaurants.

For a large group Margarita and Mexican outing you really can't beat Cactus Cantina. Okay, for atmosphere, it's sister restaurant, Lauriol Plaza just north of Dupont, JUST might have it beat, but let's face it, the wait times are absolutely off the wall.
Cactus Cantina serves a similar menu with the same awesome margaritas and a much calmer, laid back atmosphere, perfect for relaxing with friends.
Try the seafood enchiladas (usually masquerading as the enchiladas de mariscos or something) or my absolute favorite, the crab and shrimp quesadillas, almost always on the daily special menu. If you're not a seafood lover, the cheese enchiladas are good, and I've never heard a complaint about the salads.
