Bartleby's creative name really says it all. The collection here is chiefly of used books, probably in better condition than at your average used bookstore, and they have a nice selection of literature from the turn of the century. The prices here are a bit higher than at some used book shops, but that naturally reflects the higher quality of the merchandise. It's definitely worth browsing through when you're in the neighborhood.

The bookstore at the Basilica has one of the largest selections of printed and multimedia sources for Roman Catholics. It has everything from prayer books to DVDs, including a large selection of books targeted especially for young adults and children. There are also several shelves devoted solely to devotional materials, prayer books, and saint biographies. The music selection offered ranges from local productions to imports.

Beyond Comics is, as you may expect, a comic book shop. This store is located on Wisconsin Avenue in DC. I visited this store because my friend said they had some nice older Marvel comics. I was very pleased with the selection when I arrived and found some nice gems. This is a solid comic bookshop.

Big Planet Comics of Washington DC Incorporated is located on Dumbarton St in the city. They have a very knowledgeable staff that keeps the store in an orderly fashion. Some comic book shops fail to keep their stores in order thus making the shopping experience more like a scavenger hunt. The selection is great and the prices are on par with other shops in the area. If they don’t have something you want in stock just ask them to ee if it is possible to place a special order.

More
Books a Million is quite a store. It is hard to believe that such a large book store appears tucked into places in Washington DC such as DuPont circle. But this book store offers thousands of books, magazines, and gifts. It also features a small cafe inside as well. The prices are fairly good and they sell a number of hard to find titles. Stop by "BAM" for a good book and a place to read.

More
I love the magazine selection at this Borders. They also have a nice cafe that serves coffee and tea drinks and snacks. The book selection is pretty good, and the staff is very helpful if you're looking for a specific book. There's a bargain section where you can get older hardbacks for less than $10. They also sell cards and gift wrap, and around holidays they sell themed gifts.

Bridge Street Books is one of many, many bookstores in DC's Capitol Hill neighborhood. But that's a good thing! We do want our politicians to be knowledgeable on both history and politics and the controversies of the day. This bookstore doesn't have too much to recommend it specifically, but it has a nice selection of current bestsellers and other volumes and if you have some time to kill, it's a cozy spot to spend some time browsing. Have fun!

They do, and dozens of other languages, besides. Candida's has a great selection of non-English books from foreign presses, and not just the Romance languages, either, buddy. The employees are wonderfully smart and polite. And if you're on the market for a new loft condo, you're in the right neighborhood. Give them a try -- you'll come back!

More
Capitol Hill Books has a good variety of used and collectable books just across the street from Eastern Market. The shop is a bit cramped, but, hey, it's a used bookstore. Charming but occasionally curt staff; whatever, they know their stuff. With some snooping, you can find a gem -- maybe a book Ted Kennedy used as a coaster?

More
Situated on the edge of the downtown business district, Chapters is paradise for fiction lovers. You might wish you'd worn some tweed -- and if you're well-versed in contemporary fiction, you might spot the next Pen/Faulkner nominee perusing the shelf next to you.
While the staff is knowledgeable and accommodating enough to help even the most inexperienced readers, most of the customers at Chapters know what they're looking for (chances are they have a novella-in-progress at home). If you can stay on their erratic mailing list, you'll be privy to some of the best literary readings in town (Whit Stillman, Amy Bloom, and I Was Amelia Earhart author, Jane Mendelsohn, have all made recent appearances).
