If you are a student at GW Law School, Washington Law and Professional Books is a great alternative to buying books at the GW bookstore. The prices are better and there is often a better selection of used books at reduced prices. When it comes to buying supplements, study guides, and canned outlines, the knowledgeable staff can direct you to the best selection for your academic needs. And they even have their own coffee bar.

More
This family-owned business located on Capitol Hill stocks the latest political thrillers and ghost-written autobiographies as well as a respectable selection of cookbooks, children's books, etc. There's nowhere to sit, and the staff tends to be a bit officious, so you should know what you want before you get there. Brace yourself for being greeted by incognito congressmen.
There are bars on this block. And a burrito place.

More
This bookstore is often crowded and very small, but it is the best you will find in Washington DC when you want to shop for used books. While its size is unfortunate the selection can be quite good. Many professors, politicians, and policy wonks dump their extras here. Sometimes when you are browsing the politics section you will run across a book from the Reagan area that has a personal note from Reagan inside thanking the former owner for their service. There are sections for many different topics though this store seems to excel in the social sciences, humanities, and fiction. They do have a rare books section for the serious collector. The pricing here is about average for a used bookstore.

Second Story Books is a pretty good store. They have a good selection and decent prices. A major weakness is their fiction section. Kulturas Books, which is only a few blocks away, has a much better fiction section. Another down point is a somewhat rude and arrogant staff. Overall though, the store is good.

More
As one would expect from a bookstore on Capitol Hill, the selection at this outlet tends towards the political and historical. If you want to buy Hillary Clinton's latest biography (or her hubby's for that matter) you will find it here! The selection of political books is good, but for literature or other topics you might want to go elsewhere. Also, prices are a bit higher than at the huge chains.

Olsson's in DC is comparable to larger book box stores like Barnes & Noble. The selection is not as big as these type of stores but they have a wealth of Books, CDs, and DVDs. My only problem with this Olsson's is the parking that is available in the area. I’ve sometimes had to drive around for long periods of time looking for a spot. Other than the parking situation the selection is very good with very reasonable prices.

I would not recommend shopping at the Newsroom. The store does have a great selection of newspapers and Magazines from all over the world in almost any language but the owner employs only recent immigrants. He pays them next to nothing and treats his employees badly. Go to this store and tell the owner you will start supporting him when he starts treating his employees better.

More
The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is a great place to visit if you're a Catholic in DC. The place is enormous--it has a big cathedral type space upstairs with little chapels entirely surrounding the perimeter, dedicated to Saints and nations. The bottom level has a crypt church as well as more of the little chapels dedicated to Saints and nations. It's a work in progress--they're continually adding more to the Cathedral every time I go. They also have a very good Catholic book store, if you're looking for something in particular.

More
This tiny bookstore on the second floor above its associated Luna Grill and Diner is small, packed, claustrophobic and wonderful. There's never any telling what you may find among its book selection and its above the street location puts it out of reach of those who don't know it's there. A great place to relax and spend a few hours just browsing books without having to deal with crowds or noise.
