More
This family-owned business located on Capitol Hill stocks the latest political thrillers and ghost-written autobiographies as well as a respectable selection of cookbooks, children's books, etc. There's nowhere to sit, and the staff tends to be a bit officious, so you should know what you want before you get there. Brace yourself for being greeted by incognito congressmen.
There are bars on this block. And a burrito place.

This relatively small bookshop in upper northwest isn't the best bookstore in DC, but it is a cute little place with a friendly staff. In addition to books they also sell CD's. The atmosphere is cozy and it's a nice place to curl up and read for a while. The smaller bookstores can't always compete with the big chains but they can make up in atmosphere for the slightly higher prices of their merchandise.

Bartleby's creative name really says it all. The collection here is chiefly of used books, probably in better condition than at your average used bookstore, and they have a nice selection of literature from the turn of the century. The prices here are a bit higher than at some used book shops, but that naturally reflects the higher quality of the merchandise. It's definitely worth browsing through when you're in the neighborhood.

Bridge Street Books is one of many, many bookstores in DC's Capitol Hill neighborhood. But that's a good thing! We do want our politicians to be knowledgeable on both history and politics and the controversies of the day. This bookstore doesn't have too much to recommend it specifically, but it has a nice selection of current bestsellers and other volumes and if you have some time to kill, it's a cozy spot to spend some time browsing. Have fun!

They do, and dozens of other languages, besides. Candida's has a great selection of non-English books from foreign presses, and not just the Romance languages, either, buddy. The employees are wonderfully smart and polite. And if you're on the market for a new loft condo, you're in the right neighborhood. Give them a try -- you'll come back!

A great shop, especially for those who love books on politics. I am not one of them, but I have many friends who, occasionally to my dismay, are, and who love to talk about it incessantly. They should come here for better company. It is also a great place to relax and browse. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful in ordering books they don't carry.

More
Olsson's in DC is comparable to larger book box stores like Barnes & Noble. The selection is not as big as these type of stores but they have a wealth of Books, CDs, and DVDs. My only problem with this Olsson's is the parking that is available in the area. I’ve sometimes had to drive around for long periods of time looking for a spot. Other than the parking situation the selection is very good with very reasonable prices.

Kulturas, as you might guess from the name, is a lefty-themed used bookstore in Dupont Circle. They have a good selection although the books are stacked two rows to a shelf which makes it difficult to find things. They have a lot of mystery novels and a nice selection of kids books as well as cookbooks and literature and some rare books as well. The prices aren't cheap, but are still a lot less than buying new.

Second Story Books is a pretty good store. They have a good selection and decent prices. A major weakness is their fiction section. Kulturas Books, which is only a few blocks away, has a much better fiction section. Another down point is a somewhat rude and arrogant staff. Overall though, the store is good.

More
The problem for book collectors these days is that once a book goes into paperback production, the harcover is almost impossible to find. Idle Time Books, now moved into a bigger location on 18th Street, has a tremdous back catalog of hardcovers and softcovers. The prices are pretty reasonable, too. I'm also always impressed by the staff's familiarity with their wares. I went in looking for an obscure Douglas Adams book and the CSR pinpointed the exact location immediately. Insane!
