Big, spacious, plenty of room, never gets crowded. Great bands show up here, and there's even a vegetarian resturant in a closed off section (free from smoke). The black and white tiled floors are a nice touch too. Doesn't cost much, and there's plenty of free parking!

You feel as though you are reliving history itself when you visit Ford's Theater. I walked right up to the door behind the balcony box that was shot through to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. In the basement is a full museum devoted to the events that unfolded there, from the death mask of the President to the clothes he wore. This is a must see historical site on anyones trip to DC. The theater is also used for special events. It is free to the Public. One of the best historic sites to see.

The Kennedy center is one of the nicest gems in the city of DC. They have world class performers from all over the globe who come and play. The ticket prices vary but are pretty reasonable most of the time. They also have it set up so that on Thursday afternoons before or at 6pm (I can't remember which) you can come and watch performers do rehearsals or small performances for free! I loved this. You get to see amazing acts for the price of metro fare (or gas). I did this all the time. I definitely recommend this place.

Woolly Mammoth recently moved into a new space that is ultra hip. The architecture is very cool it almost doesn't feel like a theatre building. The space is small so there's a feeling of intimacy duriing the show. Woolly Mammoth also has tremendous discounts. For example, during the first performace of a new show, it's "pay what you can" - especially great for students and for those who normally wouldn't be able to afford to go. They also offer discounts for those 25 & under. They also have a theatre school.

Arena Stage produces American classics, as well as new American plays. Every play is top notch, ranging from from monologs, to musicals, to comedy. The cast and production team are professionals who reflect the fact that Arena is the largest non-profit theater in DC. Being based in DC they have some good African American themed plays, including Crowns, which tells the stories of various generations of women via the hats they wear. Crowns was received so well that it has ran, outside of the regular season, for the last two summers.

The Dance Place is snuggled along a side street in Brookland, an area near Catholic University, off Rhode Island Avenue in Northeast, that's seen a real estate resurgence. It makes sense, because it's such an interesting area. I like the fact that the Dance Place has been there through all of Brookland's phases. This is a great, small theater for seeing interesting dance companies from all over the country (maybe the globe). Every seat in the house is good, the prices are low and it's so small that you'll have a chance to speak to company members afterward. You'll be able to find parking on the street no more than a block away.

It probably helps if you know Spanish because most of Gala's shows are in Spanish - but they always have English surtitles. In November 2005 they are doing an English play, "Eyewitness Blues", with the Washington Performing Arts Society. This is the 30th anniversary year of the group, which does a terrific job of exciting presentations. Now they are in their own permanent new home in the old Tivoli Theater with convenient parking in a secure garage behind the theater for $6, and just one block from the Columbia Heights Metro station. I heartily recommend Gala for everyone!

Any time I've been to the Velvet Lounge, I've gone just on a whim or because they're offering one of their free beer nights (check out their website for more info), the music has been good sometimes and bad sometimes. The lounge itself is dark, smoky, and can be claustrophobic, but only for the biggest of showings. Most other times, it's a great place to hang out, grab a drink or two, and maybe discover a pretty good band you never would have heard of otherwise.

More
Tucked into Rock Creek Park at 16th and Colorado, the bowl of Carter Barron sinks beneath the canopy of trees to set an extremely soothing musical or theatrical experience. The amphitheater is huge -- getting a seat shouldn't be your concern for the free events hosted there periodically throughout the summer -- just getting a seat close enough to see the stage.

More
Student theater from this Georgetown group is really hit or miss. Some shows are well-directed, -produced, and -acted while others lean in the opposite direction. Either way, affordable ticket prices for all (especially relative to overall DC theater prices), make it worth the financial gamble. The actual theater is small and can be a bit cramped, so make sure you're well prepared to sit in a space that can be a little claustrophobic before going to a show.
