Trover's is a cute and quaint gift store (with a book store just a few doors down) with quirky finds that make Hallmark seem entirely too glitzy and commercialized. Even if you don't find what you're looking, this is a great for-browsing-purposes-only store. It's neat to look around and even better when you score a find.

Ashley Gwinn and Ronnie Mervis,
Thank you for making my diamond upgrade a very possible and pleasurable experience. I realize my story is a little unique. I was in South Africa and was introduced to Mervis Brothers Diamonds by a friend. I was looking for an investment grade diamond. I purchased a nice diamond and kept it locked away. Recently I reconnected with a long lost love from Ireland. While traveling in the USA, I looked up Mervis Diamonds on a recommendation from Ken in South Africa. I talked to Ashley Gwin and later Ronnie (with that familiar SA accent). We were able upgrade my diamond for one suitable for my soon to be bride. I was able to make this purchase over the internet and long distance successfully. Ashley did a fantastic job of understanding my needs and she picked out a perfect diamond for us. I appreciate all the help and the fantastic customer service.

After my last purchase from Kate Spade (a leather wallet), I received in the mail a handwritten thank you note on heavy card stock from the sales associate that helped me pick it out. It wasn't even a very big purchase, given that the wallet had been marked down, so the gesture was that much more appreciated. I'm been impressed by the consistently gracious service at the Kate Spade stores I've visited. Even if I'm only buying little stocking stuffers like packs of pencils and tins of mints, the salesperson will wrap them individually in tissue for me, before tucking them into one of the Kate Spade signature striped bags.
Although I would love to be able to buy their handbags regularly, my budget doesn't really permit that, so when I visit their Georgetown store, I'm usually buying stationery (which I love). Kate Spade has really high quality, often whimsical stationery that is not expensive--most sets are under $25. The envelopes are lined with tissue paper or have some sort of pattern inside. I've bought for myself and as gifts, the sets of boxed notes, invitations, and pencil cases. The little tins of mints, chocolate bars, and packs of pencils are an inexpensive (all under $10) way of giving a little bit of Kate Spade to someone.
The handbags there are typically between $200-$400 and I think very high quality. I had a leather shoulder bag for about 2 years when the zipper broke and I brought it into the store and they sent it out to be repaired, free of charge, and they shipped it back to my house with a new pink lining inside as well. Kate Spade also offers really adorable shoes, although I have yet to purchase a pair (they are definitely on my wish list though).
Since the Georgetown store is rather small, I frequently look on the Kate Spade website, particularly for their home items, like stemware, dessert plates, picture frames, etc. The benefit to the website is a larger selection, and many more sale items than in the store. Although I'm signed up to receive email/mail newsletters, they don't send out sale notifications, so I just have to remember to check. One thing to be aware of is the online sample sale (also not advertised) that happens in mid to late October.

I love Troy Artis' clothing....it's workable, wearable and still edgy. Affordable too. His clothing line for women seems to focus on items you would wear to the office or out for the evening, and they're styled to fit real women, not twiggy fashion models. And though his work is original, the prices are not any higher than you would expect to find in a mid-range department store. Troy himself is a very warm, very engaging person too. Support this talented, young designer.

The Barnes & Noble on M street is awesome. This is in an older building with all kinds of character. They have installed escalators to shuttle you between their 3 full floors of books, which is a major plus in my eyes. I do not do stairs well due to Lupus so this feature is what puts them over the top into the 5 star realm for me.
They have everything every other B&N has, and then some. The place is just huge. In addition to the racks and racks of discounted books, they have a full toy & games section which I adore... this was how I got introduced to Triopoly. Very cool.
They have a large section of knick-knacky stuff too like fabulous book ends and book marks galore.
And of course no B&N would be complete without a Starbucks, now would it? Additionally, they have a huge display of Godiva chocolates to tempt me unmercifully.
The staff is wonderfully helpful, and if they don't know the answer, they will find it for you.
PROS: Huge, escalators
CONS: Not on the metro line

Lovely place to shop for upscale herb and garden items. On the grounds of the National Cathedral, next to the Bishop's Garden, which is worth a stroll while you're there. Ample parking in underground garage if you come up short on the close. Jams and gifts, cards and chimes. Fun to browse or buy and a treat for out of towners with green thumbs.

My fiance and I both go here for women's tailoring and men's tailoring. They did an incredible job of taking pleats out of pleated pants for my fiance and alterations for my designer clothing. I highly recommend them!
