American Valet is probably so-named because it's right by the American University metro stop which makes it nicely accessible to folks like me who don't have a car in DC. They do shoe repair and dry cleaning and other basic services that busy folks need. The prices are quite reasonable and the service is prompt so this is a good place to go if you need your soles redone.

City Dogs advertises itself at "Day Care for Dogs." It provides both short-term (during the day) and longer term boarding of dogs in their kennels. This business prides itself on treating animals humanly and the staff are clearly dog lovers themselves which makes a big difference when they are caring for your pet. Take a look around the facilities and maybe you will want to board your dog here next time you are forced to leave him or her at home.

In this disposable age, it's difficult at times to remember that when the soles on your shoes fall apart they are not immediately destined for the dustbin. Corrective Shoe Repair can come to the rescue and attach new soles or repair tears and make your shoes appear almost new. The cost is considerably less than a new pair of shoes, so consider repairing before replacing.

The Custom Shop is a very distinguished store for the upscale (or hoping to be upscale) man who wants nice leather shoes or an elegant shirt or tie. The selection tends toward the Brooks Brothers type of dress. The quality is quite good but the prices are definitely up there so in my opinion it is possible to do better at stores like Filene's Basement which is just down the street.

Serving the Adams Morgan neighborhood, DC Dry Cleaners quickly became my one-stop shop when I moved into town. They also have tailoring services available. Recently they added a computerized inventory system to better keep track of your clothes, which is a definite plus in their favor. They have 24-hour service available, but usually their standard two day service worked fine. The staff is terrific, too. I don't think I've ever brought in a stain they couldn't get out.

This is an old-school camera shop. They develop great pictures, but if you drop them off one minute late they won't accept them. You have to be on the ball with these people. But once they get your film they do a great job. Also, they are very helpful when you are buying a camera. They also gave me great advice on where to find a photo lab I could rent out for personal use.

More
Friendship is a tip-top operation -- almost. Its fairly new building near the Tenleytown metro station is sleek, clean and modern. It's organized. An online service reminds you when your pet needs to come in for a check up or vaccinations. And there is a mail newsletter and a sophisticated website as well. My only beef with Friendship is that not all of the staff are well-versed enough in bedside manner. When my last cat was dying (unbeknownst to me), I spent an awful week taking her back and forth to Friendship. One vet barely spoke to me and offered vague answers to my questions. Another told me my cat was going to be OK, yet didn't seem to be familiar with her history. Finally, on a day when she was clearly deteriorating, I raced her to Friendship - again. Fortunately, the vet on duty was very kind and told me the truth -- that she had a few hours to live. She helped me through the whole painful process and, when my cat did pass away on her own about an hour later, let me take as much time as I needed to be with her. When I got a new kitten sometime later, I was lucky enough to have another kind and smart vet for her first checkup. My advice....do patronize Friendship, but find a vet that you like and stick with that one. Ask for that one in particular when you make appointments. Otherwise, you may wind up with some smart yet insensitive twit who is better suited to laboratory work.
