Melody Record Shop is a frustrating store. They have a really great selection of all kinds of music. Unfortunately, the cds tend to cost upwards of seventeen dollars. So while they have everything you want, you feel ripped off if you buy it. If they would make their prices reasonable it would be a perfect cd store.

When I first moved to Dupont Circle 8 years ago, there were 3 music shops within one block in Dupont Circle. Now two of the three have been replaced by retail clothing stores, but fortunately one still stands. And probably for good reason: it was always a notch above the others in terms of quality and variety. The store has music from around the world and tends to cater toward that random record that you wouldn't necessarily be able to find at Best Buy, or wherever it is that people shop for music nowadays.

If you've recently been imprisoned for music file sharing, this is the place to mend your ways. They do a good job in their ordering, taking the shining path between mainstream money-makers and Albanian zither LPs. Their staff is also excellent: friendly, helpful and knowledgeable (at least most of the time). They also serve(d?) as something of a hub for the local music scene. You won't find a great deal, but at least you're supporting a local business, and the clerks know a lot about music.

With the most off the beaten path selections anywhere in downtown DC, Melody offers people looking for anything from Top 40 to International to Indie Rock to Club to House and anything and everything in between. It does have a cluttered feel to it, with weekends getting quite crowded, and as hinted to in my title, prices are a couple/few dollars more than your local Best Buy or Circuit City. However, if you're looking for the hottest new release that you can't find anywhere else and are willing to pay the extra buck or two, this is your place.
