I’ve been to Second Story Books with my wife a few times in the summer months when they have their sidewalk book sales. My wife is a book lover and always looks for non-main stream reading items. These items don’t interest me but she loves to peruse the stores sidewalk selection and the used books for sale inside the store. She always seems to find a handful of books to purchase here.

Second Story is small little store off of Dupont Circle with amazing depth. Because DC is lacking in used books, this store is able to collect a very odd and interesting selection of used books. Naturally the politics and current affairs section here is a treasure trove as is the history section. Some rare books are available for purchase as well. Customer service is good here and prices are fair.

Second story books has been around for a while and they are well known for their $1 sidewalk book sales which happen pretty often. If you go inside you find a wide array of used books and cds which line the shelves. It can get a little cluttered and messy but it's worth it if you are willing to put in time to find something special. They also offer big old movie posters which could brighten up any apartment.

This bookstore is often crowded and very small, but it is the best you will find in Washington DC when you want to shop for used books. While its size is unfortunate the selection can be quite good. Many professors, politicians, and policy wonks dump their extras here. Sometimes when you are browsing the politics section you will run across a book from the Reagan area that has a personal note from Reagan inside thanking the former owner for their service. There are sections for many different topics though this store seems to excel in the social sciences, humanities, and fiction. They do have a rare books section for the serious collector. The pricing here is about average for a used bookstore.

I am writing this review for the DC Second Story because unfortunately the one in Bethesda was forced to close. Anyway, Second Story has great prices and a unique, eclectic, excellent selection of famous and obscure books. This applies to records as well. The staff is composed of helpful book lovers. This is a local establishment, and you'd do well to stop by.

This is one of the Dupont Circle areas many used bookstores. The collection here tends toward the philosophical and historical although they do have a shelf in the front of recently published books. They also sell records and DVD's, though the selection isn't as good. I recall the prices on the DVD"s and videos being quite expensive for used merchandise, but then I'm a frequent yard-sale shopper so they may be reasonable.

High shelves full of musty books and old records abound in this used book and music store. For the book enthusiast who wants to just look around without having to wade through mountains of "best-sellers", this is your type of place. If you're looking for a more recent and/or popular title, try the national chain of your choice, but don't bother stopping here. In the summer months, this store's sidewalk sale is the best: usually 4 hardcover books for no more than $20, no matter what the cover price.
